Did You Know? There is no genetic difference between a "chestnut" horse and a "sorrel" horse. The gene that controls this color is seen in interaction with other genes that act as a "dimmer switch". Genetically, the lightest yellow sorrel is the same as the darkest liver chestnut, except for the effect of shading. For most practical purposes, the terms are decided by the particular horse breed registry. For instance, the AQHA recognizes both chestnut and sorrel, but separates them somewhere in the middle of the shade spectrum. The Jockey Club and the Arabian Horse Association only recognize "chestnuts". |
