Delta was seized by law enforcement and awarded to BEHS. She was underweight when she arrived, but now she is looking good. She does not appear to have been abused, but she was certainly starved and neglected. She is very trusting of people and loves to be brushed. She can be approached and she will walk up to you and will halter easily. She gets along well with a mare who arrived with her and they will eat out of the same feeder. She has very bright eyes and always looks “surprised” She will follow you anywhere even if you don’t have food in your hand.

After spending over a year in foster care learning to trust humans and recovering from his mental and physical wounds, Frazer's foster mom decided what was best for him was to keep him with her so his life would remain stable and she could continue to work with him. Frazer has a wonderful home with people who love and care about him

He was also blind in one eye and very hard to handle on his blind side. His foster "mom" spent much time working with him, and he learned to trust new people and new situations. She showed him in a BEHS fundraising horse show where he won Halter Champion! As she continued to work with him, Geronimo learned to accept a saddle and work in the round pen. His adopters plan to complete his training and ride him for fun.

    BEHS 193 - Kachina

    Adopted September 3, 2007

    Approximately 2002, Quarter Horse Mare

Kachina knows how to lead, load, halter and tie. She was stand-offish when she arrived, but she's now letting her "foster mom" approach her in the pasture. She stands for fly spraying, although she's nervous and she stands for the farrier. She's been ridden in a round pen at her foster home at a walk and trot. She is quiet under saddle, but she does not seem to know a lot. She needs a confident rider who can continue her training. Her foster mom says that while she bucks and rears when playing in the pasture, she's never done either when she works with her. She says Kachina is sweet and lets people hug her neck and pet her anywhere. She feels Kachina will make a wonderful horse for a lucky adopter.

    2001, Arabian/Tennessee Walking Horse gelding

Phoenix was BEHS' first horse. His owner could not keep him, and he was looking for a home. BEHS offered to take Phoenix in. Once he got here, we discovered that although he was very young (just four years old at the time), he had already been severely physically abused. He has lumps behind his ears and arthritis in his front legs from the abuse. It had also left him very leery of all new people. Phoenix's foster "mom" knew he might be with her for years - and nearly two years after he arrived, he finally found his "perfect home.

    BEHS 133 - Sassy

    Adopted September 3, 2007

    1978 Red roan appaloosa gelding

Sassy is the foal of BEHS' Duchess, who had limited human handling prior to arriving in BEHS. Sassy's arrival was a surprise to her foster mom, who arrived home after a 4 day trip in time to see Sassy stand to her feet for the first time. Right now, Sassy is still too young to ride or drive, but she has the ability to do anything once trained.

    BEHS 083 - Shamrock

    Adopted February 9, 2007

    2000, registered Arabian gelding

Shamrock was removed from negligent owners by law enforcement and awarded to BEHS by the courts. He’s a very pretty boy with a beautiful, floating trot. Although he’s not broke to ride, he’s still young enough to train – and that’s just what his adopter will be doing. Once broke to ride, Shamrock could be trained for anything!

    BEHS 118 - Shiloh

    Adopted July 15, 2007

    Approximately 1988, unregistered Paint mare

Shiloh's owner surrendered her to BEHS when he was investigated for neglect. She was underweight, but she quickly gained weight in her foster home. Her previous owner claimed his children rode her - and she acted like a spoiled horse who had been allowed to get away with too much. But Shiloh quickly learned. Her easy-going personality and ability to learn quickly made her a popular horse and she was adopted quickly by a family who had another another horse from a different rescue a few years earlier.

    BEHS 31 - Sierra

    Adopted August 30, 2007

    Approx 1988, Quarter Horse Mare

Sierra was donated to BEHS from an equine rescue in Louisiana to move her to a different climate. When she came, she had been diagnosed with COPD and put on steroids. It was thought that moving her to a drier climate would help. She is quiet natured and not dominant. She seems to get along okay with geldings or mares and tends to run from a fight.

    BEHS 60 - Silver

    Adopted February 22, 2007

    1976-1981, Quarter Horse Gelding

Silver's owners were reported for neglect and decided to donate him since they were unable to care for him. He has severe arthritis in both front feet and was emaciated. He gained weight quickly and arthritis supplements helped keep him more comfortable but he was not ridable. A wonderful person adopted him as a companion to another horse - and Silver is now loved and well cared for.

    BEHS 122 - Sprite

    Adopted February 26, 2007

    2006, palomino, grade filly

Sprite was surrendered to BEHS when her owner was investigated for neglect. When she arrived, she was very underweight and had such a severely infected sunburn on her legs that she had to undergo surgery to remove the infected skin. After surgery, Sprite was very uncertain of humans - and who can blame her! Luckily she came around and won the hearts of her foster "parents". They decided to make her a permanent addition to their home.

Sundancer (aka Sunny) was donated by an owner who could no longer keep her. Sunny has very good ground manners. She comes to you most of the time when you call her and is patient while haltering. She is good with a mixed herd. She is a very energetic senior and does not look or act her age

    BEHS 093 - Tempest

    Adopted February 14, 2007

1999, blue roan, Welsh Mountain Pony gelding.

Tempest's owner purchased a stallion and two mares and turned them out to roam free. After several years, they had a herd of wild ponies which they couldn't care for. They asked BEHS to take them in, and when Tempest arrived he had never been handled by humans. His "foster mom" made an effort to gain his trust and decided to adopt him and give him a place to live out his life.

    Approx 1995 Peruvian Paso mare

Tiffany was surrendered to BEHS when her owners were investigated for neglect. Not much was known of her history except that she was ridden on trails and had several foals in her past. This beautiful mare tries very hard to please and will certainly be the pride and joy of her happy adopter.

    BEHS 57 - Topaz

    Adopted September 30, 2007

    2003, grade gelding

Topaz was purchased at auction by a BEHS member and donated to BEHS. He was led into the auction ring but froze in fear and practically no one was bidding on him. He literally was shaking with fright. It was love at first sight when Topaz and his potential adopters met. Topaz's color was just absolutely stunning to them and Topaz seemed to really like them too, especially all those carrots. Topaz's foster home did a wonderful job getting Topaz socially friendly and now he has his very own home to call his own. Congratulations to you Topaz and the Sonnier family. We know his foster home is going to miss him, but then again she is so happy that he has at last found his very own place to call home.

    BEHS 123 - Tuffy

    Adopted October 25, 2007

    2006, grey grade filly

Tuffy was surrendered to BEHS when her owner was investigated for neglect. She was a typical young unhandled filly when she first arrived. With the help of her foster home she has learned to trust her handlers, lead without crowding, pick up all four feet, and back up. She is easily caught. She is an affectionate filly and seems to be a quick study.
