    BEHS 160- Ada Monroe

    Adopted December 28, 2008

Approx 1996 bay quarter horse mare

Ada had been adopted once and returned. It wasn't long before someone else took and interest and applied to adopt her. Ada went to her new home and got off to a bit of rocky start, but they had fallen in love with her already - and so had their other horse. Thanks to Lisa, her husband and family for giving Ada a well deserved chance at being an awesome horse for you all. Look forward to updates and pictures!!

    BEHS 259 - Aladdin

    Adopted August 28, 2008

2003, dark bay draft cross gelding

Aladdin came to BEHS along with several herdmates. He was so thin that Denise worried he might not make it. But he began gaining weight and thrived with good hair. The big horse appeared to be a draft cross - one lacking much grace! But his big, clunky appearance didn't matter, his foster mom fell in love with him. She sent Aladdin to training and plans to turn him into her trail horse. Congrats to Aladdin and Kathy!

Aleeah arrived at BEHS less than a year ago, a starving, scrawny yearling filly. Luckily quick intervention and good care helped Aleeah gain weight and blossom into a gorgeous little filly with an awesome attitude. Her foster mom's brother fell in love with Aleeah and decided to add him to his family. Congrats to the Williamson Family and Aleeah!

    BEHS 135 - Amigo

    Adopted December 19, 2008

    Approximately 2000, bay stock-type gelding

Amigo was another one that had been adopted and returned. When he was returned he seemed a bit worried about saddles and what they might do to him. His foster home worked with him and he became accustomed to tack again. Misty met him and bonded early on with this very sweet gelding and had to have him for herself. While waiting for it to all go through, she went and saw him several times, just getting more aquainted with him. Now, he is in is forever home and doing well. Thanks to Misty for giving this guy another chance!

    BEHS 148- Biscuit

    Adopted May 31, 2008

    Approx. 1988, Quarter Horse mare.

Biscuit came to BEHS from a neglect case. When a neglect investigator arrived on the scene, they originally thought Biscuit was dead – she was laying flat on her side and not moving. Suddenly Biscuit raised her head and looked at the investigator, and the investigator knew she couldn’t leave her. Biscuit was severely underweight and walking on badly overgrown hooves. Once Biscuit got to a foster home, we discovered that she suffered from an old injury and was not ridable. Fortunately for Biscuit, she found an adopter who wanted a pet – and she agreed to spoil Biscuit and give her a great home for life.

He gained weight and turned out to be a nice riding horse. Although he didn't attend the June Adopt-a-thon in Alvarado, his adopter saw his photo there, read his description and knew Boo Bear was the horse for him. Adopted November 6, 2008

    2001 Quarter Horse/mustang gelding

Braveheart was donated to BEHS when his owner could no longer keep him. She donated money to send him to training, too, but Braveheart flunked out of training. He's a very strong-willed horse who bucks and bolts under saddle. His foster "mom" tried working him past his issues, but she had no success. She decided to adopt him and give him a place to live out his life with love and great care.

    BEHS 149- Charity

    Adopted September 20, 2008

    2002 Quarter Horse mare

Charity came to the rescue from an awful neglect case over a year ago. Law enforcement officers found her hung up in a tree and covered in open wounds. They took her to a local veterinarian's office, but Charity was so standoffish and scared, that she intimidated the veterinarians and their staff. After moving into a BEHS foster home, Charity healed and learned to trust humans. Her adopter met her and decided to give the little mare a chance. She is working with a trainer, and she has plans to make Charity into a great riding horse. Congrats Robin and Charity!

    Adopted February 23, 2008

    2004, Buckskin BLM mustang mare

Chelsea's previous owner adopted her from BLM, was moving overseas, and donated her to BEHS. Chelsea was a favorite with everyone who met her while she was with us. Her new mom had this to sat about her: "I have renamed Chelsea to Montana. She is a dream come true for me. I waited for her for 27 years and know that we will enjoy many more together." We at BEHS wish Montana and her new mom many happy trails.

    Adopted November, 2008

    2008 paint filly

Cherokee was born at her Bluebonnet foster home on April 27 this year. Her mom was part of a neglect case and came to the rescue pregnant. Of course we didn't know when exactly she was due, and Kenna and her family watched over her closely wondering when she would share her foal with all of us. Cherokee arrived and quicly stole the Graves' family heart. They've adopted her and made her a permanent part of the family.

    Adopted March 9, 2008

1999, 12.2 hh, chestnut, Chincoteague Pony mare

Dottie is an adorable pony from the legendary Chincoteague herd. Her previous owner bought her after the famous Chincoteague swim when she was only four months old. They brought her home, gentled her and trained her. However they had too many horses and felt Dottie didn? get enough attention, so they donated her to BEHS. Dottie? an adorable pony who is broke to ride and laid back. She was adopted by a family as a riding pony in 2006 but was unfortunately returned. Dottie's new foster family fell in love with her and they have adopted her to be a riding pony for their grandchildren.

    BEHS 056 - Faeden

    Adopted April 28, 2008

    2001, grade mare

Faeden's previous owner rescued her out of a feedlot and had her shipped to Texas (to spare her a trip to the slaughterhouse). She turned out to be a lot of horse to handle, so her owner placed her with BEHS so she could become someone's riding her. She was adopted but returned when she developed an eye problem and became blind in one eye and had limited vision in the other eye. With Faeden's personality, this made riding her anymore unlikely. Her original donor adopted her back in order to give her a place to comfortably live out her life.

    Adopted November 30, 2008

    Approximately 1997 chestnut grade mare

Flicka was removed from negligent owners by law enforcement officials and awarded to BEHS by the courts. Flicka suffered from intermittent lameness problems and we knew a life as a riding horse was not in her future. One of our terrific foster homes agreed to keep her long term and decided she just needed to be a permanent part of the herd. She is currently enjoying life with another mare and a gelding and has room to roam or to stand quietly and enjoy the pretty scenery.

    Adopted August 2008

Approx. 1981 chestnut quarter horse gelding

General is an older gelding - but no one has told him he's nearly 30! He was picked up from a negligent owner and was near death when he arrived at the rescue. His foster mom helped him gain weight. Once he was healthy, she discovered he was a nice riding horse. Although some people are leery of adopting a horse in his late 20s, General's adopter decided to take a chance on him and we're sure she won't be disappointed. Congrats to General and Carol!

    BEHS 251- Hannah

    Adopted July 13, 2008

    2004, buckskin grade mare

Adopted by new members Bob L and Magdalena S. Bob and Madga met Tori at the Texarkana event and were smitten. They applied to adopt her and while their inspection was being done, we worked hard to find them a suitable pasturemate for Tori. We don't like to adopt out only horses, and especially a youngster like Tori. I know Bob and Magda must have thought we would never find one, then they saw Hannah. Given Hannah's background with youngsters, it seemed to be a perfect match - all the way around. Bob and Magda picked the girls up this weekend. Hannah and Tori are bonding with each other and their new family. Thank you Bob and Magda!

    Adopted October 2008

    2004 Welsh Mountain pony mare

Jewel arrived at the rescue in March 2006 along with eleven other Welsh Mountain Ponies. Her former owner had purchased a stallion and two mares and turned them out on pasture where he let them breed and then let the offspring inbreed for several years. He did not handle any of the horses, so they were living as wild horses. When the owner could no longer care for them, Bluebonnet took them into the rescue and set about taming them. Jewel came around slowly and began the search for her forever home. She met him at the 2008 Bluebonnet Horse Expo and went home a few days later. Congrats to Jewel and Chuck!

    BEHS 142 - Kido

    Adopted April 1, 2008

    2000 Paint gelding

Kido came to BEHS severely underweight. His owner had several horses she could not care for and agreed to surrender Kido to BEHS when an investigator arrived at her property. He was covered with lice and long hair and all his bones protruded. He was terrified of humans and slow to learn to trust. His adopter fell in love with him and his story, and she wanted to give him a home where he could hang out and learn to trust again. She says that if she can ride him one day that will be exciting, but if he’s not comfortable ever being ridden she won’t mind.

Patches did not like to be caught in the pasture, but once caught she was easy to handle. She would come for treats when the other ones did, but she was still shy. Janelle walked out in the pasture one day and returned with Patches without difficulty. Love was flowing and the match was made. It wasn? long before Janelle said Rick were interested in Patches but the bond was really between Patches and Janelle. BEHS -001 - Phoenix

    Adopted November 6, 2008

    2001, Arabian/Tennessee Walking Horse gelding

Phoenix was BEHS' first horse. His owner could not keep him, and he was looking for a home. BEHS offered to take Phoenix in. Once he got here, we discovered that although he was very young (just four years old at the time), he had already been severely physically abused. He has lumps behind his ears and arthritis in his front legs from the abuse. It had also left him very leery of all new people. Phoenix was adopted but returned when his adopters suddenly had to move. His original foster mom decided he had been through enough in his life and gave him a place to live out his life.

    Adopted July 18, 2008

    Approx 2004, Tennessee Walker Gelding

Ranger came to BEHS from a neglect case along with several other horses. He was underweight and only gained weight slowly. A volunteer who helped his foster home fell in love with Ranger and decided to make him her own.

2010 update on Ranger: Ranger was one of our fosters. We spent a lot of time with him but getting his trust has taken a long time. I think he was tazed by some helpers during his rescue. After we had him, he had a couple of hoof abscesses and was always low in the pecking order. We had him at the house for a while in the pasture by himself by the garden taking care of his last abscess. I love TWH and always thought he was so beautiful. I would have loved to kept him but had to sing the "foster" song. I would work in the garden as part of my "therapy" and just talk and talk to him as he hung his head over the fence watching me. Janice adopted him even before his hoof healed and came to see him every day and feed him. So he has a Mom, Janice" and I guess I am his grandmother. Since he lives in one of our pastures, I get to see him often. This is the first time I have had chance to spend some time with him standing tied. He is doing so good. Still a little hard to catch in a group, but once caught he is a doll. Janice is convinced now that other people have ridden him that he is safe and is going to start riding him more.

BEHS 265- Whiskey

    Adopted August 6, 2008

2005 or 2006 Grey grade gelding

Whiskey came into BEHS in early June. Pearland Animal Control seized him and Jubilee in a neglect case. They asked us to take them to finish Jubilee's rehabilitation and find them forever homes. When they arrived, Whiskey was a bit standoffish and always went around with his ears back. He didn't like to be caught, either, and I wondered what I got myself into! But after a few days, he learned that being caught meant he got dinner, and he decided he liked being caught just fine! He also started hanging over the fence and his stall panels to watch me and begin nickering for his dinner. I learned that he was a laid back horse - nothing bothered him. I could tie him, groom him, fly spray him, bath him and he stood for it. He didn't mind being saddled or bridled, either. I did find his one bad habit - he is incredibly barn sour. So barn sour that he runs for the barn under saddle and I couldn't stop him. I feared that would make him unadoptable. BUT ... Whiskey fond his adopter today. :) I spoke to Adoree on the phone several times and met her at the Adopt-a-thon. She was so excited that I couldn't help but be excited, too. She met Whiskey today and she and her husband both looked him over and decided he would work well. She won his love - with an apple. :) He loaded well and they headed on their way. She's going to work with him under saddle, fix his bolting problem, and then they're going to be trail riding pals! I'll miss Whiskey - he's a neat horse - but I am so glad to see him get just what he deserves: someone to love him!

    Whiskey would like to thank:
