    BEHS 47- Abby

    Adopted January 19, 2009

    Approx 2000 brown donkey jenney

This is another one that had a pending adoption that didn't go through. Pearl and Abby had been together since they were seized back in 2005. Pearl is an older donkey and the two seemed to depend on one another. The other applicant wanted both, then decided on just Abby. Upon going to meet Abby, they fell in love and instantly bonded with Pearl instead and took her home, leaving Abby. This opened the door for the person next in line and that was Michelle F. Abby was taken to her new home not too long ago! Thanks and congratulations to all!

    1995, Arabian mare

Angelfire (aka - Angel) and Pretty Boy - were a part of the large Hopkins Co seizure in May of this year. Denise and David M. were fostering them and introduced them to Angela G. and Lisa S., who quickly applied to adopt these two lucky Bluebonnet horses. Angela and Lisa are working with these two to make them the best equine citizens that they can be. Angelfire and Pretty Boy have a beautiful place to call home from now on. Thank you for that, Angela and Lisa! Wishing you many happy years with your new horses!

    BEHS-291 Aramis

    Adopted October 10, 2009

    2003, grade gelding

Aramis had been with Bluebonnet for just over a year when Allison H-C came across him, while looking online for horses available for adoption. He is listed as grade, but very much an Arab/Arab type - energetic, green and a nice little guy. As it turned approval came right before the Expo. Allison had a trip planned down that way and brought her trailer with her when she came to meet Aramis in Austin. Aramis came to us untrained, but had gone to a trainer and was started under saddle. His foster mom Kathy, was quite attached to him and knew he needed a special person to finish his training and handle him well. They met at the Expo, Kathy rode him and then Allison. It wasn't anytime and we could see that Aramis had found his adopter! I am not sure what they might do down the road, but I will not be surprised to see endurance or showing of some sort in Aramis' future. But wait there is more...(see Tanner)

    BEHS-369 Ariel

    Adopted October 10, 2009

    1998 Arabian mare

Tammy K had applied to adopt with Bluebonnet back in the very early summer of this year - about two weeks after Ariel came into our care. Ariel came from a large seizure in May. She is a very pretty, flashy Arab mare. She has a nice disposition and seemed to have been handled in her life. She was another that went to a trainer to get her started and she came along nicely. Being already approved, Tammy came to the Expo, met Ariel and decided to adopt her. Tammy's first choice ended not being the right one, but she hung in there with us and found the horse she had been looking for in Ariel. We wrote the contract out right there. Ariel was formally adopted, had a new mom and home waiting for her.

    BEHS 335 - Beauty

    Adopted December 12, 2009

    Approx. 1989, stock-type mare

Beauty was signed over to BEHS in March of 2009. She came to us pretty thin, but rehabbed nicely. At twenty years old, most horses have 'been there and done that'. Beauty is no exception, she does not mind anything - dogs, cats, tractors, sawing, etc. - only the cows in the pasture next door, though she did allow one calf to share a bucket of feed with her. She won a ribbon at the Expo this year (pictured) and has been patiently waiting for her right person to come along. This weekend, Theresa Y., a member of Bluebonnet went to meet Beauty. Theresa decided she was the one, adopted and took her home today. Congratulations, beautiful Beauty! Happy trails to you and your new family!!

    Adopted March 26, 2009

    1996 Palomino Quarter horse gelding

Comanche came to BEHS as a donation from a couple that could no longer keep him. His pasture mate from several years had died and he was lonely, so they thought of BEHS. As soon as he stepped onto the property of his foster home, he was named Comanche. After just a couple of days, the foster home knew they wanted to adopt Comanche. Although Even if riding never happens for the two of them, Comanche has a home forever at Favoring Winds Ranch along with the two other BEHS horses that were adopted by them, Dottie and Chloe. The Pinnell family feels so blessed to have three such wonderful beautiful horses and thanks the donors and BEHS for putting them and Comanche together.

    BEHS 101- Dixie

    Adopted October, 2009

    1996 Quarab mare

Dixie has been with BEHS over 3 years. I have been her only foster home, and she is very special to me. I have taken her to each and every adoption event (Austin, Ft. Worth, Texarkana, and back again) and Expo since she came to live with me, just knowing that someone to love her and appreciate her was out there, somewhere. She loves attention and needed her very own family. Imagine my surprise to find that she was being adopted by a couple who lived only 20 miles away from me! And, it turned out that I've known them for years too! Henry will be Dixie's companion and share in the love and affection of these oh-so-nice people. Henry is the mammoth donkey that turns heads everywhere he goes, and demands love from everyone he meets. He has lived with me almost a year, and has been in the rescue for 3, I believe. Three cheers for a happy ending for these 2 great equines and the great people who now have them!

    BEHS 3 - Dream Girl

    Adopted March 31, 2009

    2006 Sorrel grade mare

Dream Girl was one of the rescue’s first horses. Her dam became pregnant while at a trainer’s barn and by the time her owners found out, it was too late to abort the foal. They moved her to a new facility and told the trainer to “just kill it” when the foal was born. The trainer hated the idea of ending an innocent life and sought someone to raise the foal. A Bluebonnet member offered to foster her, and a few days after she was born, Dream Girl became a part of the Bluebonnet Family. She struggled to learn to drink from a bottle or bucket and was a sickly foal. She recovered and grew into a beautiful young horse. She found her forever home where she’ll be a spoiled pet and riding horse.

    BEHS 86 - Duchess

    Adopted October 31, 2009

    1998 Welsh Mountain pony mare

I used to get frustrated when I read a book and the ending left me hanging. No happy ending, no end to the mystery, problems left unsolved. Horses have helped me to realize that sometimes there is no perfect, storybook ending to our lives. If you work with rescue horses long enough, some day you will have one enter your life with the apparent purpose of simply keeping you humble. You may think you are pretty good at working with horses, and then WHAM! That horse makes you feel like you know nothing. Duchess is such a horse. This little pony entered my life in March, 2005. I have written ad nauseum about the futile attempts to halter her, gentle her, even one long and very exhausting attempt to get her to give to pressure, this past summer. Her capacity to give to humans is very limited. After three years and six months, I am able to pet her face when she eats out of a bucket I am holding - essentially where we started, a couple days after she arrived. She has spent the time in my place in a carefully structured environment, for her safety. Her little pasture opened into the enclosed barn yard, which led to the barn. She could be herded from stall to barn yard to pasture and back again, and was very familiar and comfortable in her little "world". During her stay, she gave birth to an adorable little filly, Sassy. I worked hard with Sassy, to prevent Duchess teaching her that humans were to be feared, and she was weaned and removed from Duchess pretty quickly, to prevent that very thing from happening. I had accepted that Duchess would probably always remain with me, and made jokes about us growing old together. Then a special person entered Duchess' life. Heather wanted a companion for her adopted Cisco. She traveled from Smithville to Navasota to see Duchess, and I showed her what Duchess was able to do with me. Heather E. has endless patience and the willingness to accept Duchess for whatever Duchess was able to offer her. Yesterday we both loaded Duchess in my trailer. We parked the trailer at the end of the barn aisle, tied the gates and doors so that Duchess couldn't push past them, and slowly herded her into the trailer. I cried a good part of the drive there and much of the drive home. I worried that Duchess would be scared and somehow get hurt, or worse, get loose and be lost forever. I worried that she and Cisco wouldn't get along. But most of all, I cried once again for the little pony who has missed so much by fearing so much in her life. She will always remain a mystery to me - why she is so fearful, what could I have done differently to help her overcome that fear - and I know there will never be answers to my questions. Just like life, Duchess is what she is, and we have to accept that, and work with what she can and does offer to us. May Heather and Duchess continue their journey and grow together.

    BEHS Frannie

    Adopted March 31, 2009

    Miniature mare

Frannie and Zoey were part of a herd of miniature horses whose owner died. He left the horses to family members who refused to care for them or part with them until they were investigated for neglect. Zoey was born after her owner passed away, and she had never been handled before arriving at BEHS. Frannie was so thin when she arrived that BEHS did not believe she would make it. Fortunately both mom and baby not only survived but thrived. Their foster home decided to adopt them and are training Frannie to drive.

    BEHS 111- Henry

    Adopted October, 2009

    1988 Mammoth jack donkey

    BEHS 376- Judge

    Adopted October 28, 2009

    1997 Arabian gelding

Judge came to BEHS in May 2009 along with fifty-six other horses as part of a neglect case. Judge and the other stallions were all kept in stalls, and many of the stalls were several feet deep with compacted manure. They had little access to water and almost no food. When rescuers went to let them out of stalls, many of the latches on the stall doors were rusted shut. Judge recovered, was gelded and began the long rode to rehabilitation. His foster mom quickly determined that he knew how to stand tied, be bathed, and have his feet handled. He let her saddle him but did not seem to have been broke to ride. His foster “mom” says he’s an insecure horse, he needs a lot of praise and reassurance that he’s doing the right thing. However he’s smart and tries hard to figure out what you ask of him. Judge’s adopter met him at the 2009 Bluebonnet Horse Expo and fell in love. She says he reminds her of a beloved horse she lost earlier this year, and she’s excited to open her home and heart to him. Congrats to Judge and Angela!

    BEHS 53- Kaluha

    Adopted February 7, 2009

    1996 Bay mustang gelding

At the 2007 Expo, Jim and Ann came to pick Kaluha up to adopt. Kaluha had other things on his plate that day and decided not to load for his foster home, so he didn't make it to the Expo at all. Thanks to Jim and Ann's patience and more planning, Kaluha made it to Paradise, Tx., where they live. They had decided to foster him though, thinking they couldn't give him the training he needed, due to his very strong flight response and other issues he had. Again, with patience (I'm seeing a theme here - patience:-)) and time, they brought him around and have taken him to several BEHS events hoping to find just the right person for him. Everywhere they go they have talked about this special horse and his needs - trying to find help for him. I think they finally realized that -they- were the help that he needed. Someone to understand him, and have (again) patience. Also, they found a couple of qualified folks to work with him. With so many working him though his fear and so forth, they also realized that he could never leave their place. I received the request that I always knew would come - to send them an adoption contract. I was so happy for Jim and Ann, but mostly Kaluha as I knew he was right where he needed to be - in Paradise! Thank you Jim and Ann, for adopting 'K'. He deserves to have such caring, loving humans to be his forever!

    BEHS Loki

    Adopted September, 2009

    2009 Sorrel grade colt

Sitka and Kenai came into BEHS in October of 2008. After they arrived, they were both found to be in foal. Before long, Sitka gave birth to Loki and Kenai had Teddy. There were a couple of problems along the way. One of the babies needed help getting started and it was touch and go for a bit. Then, sadly Kenai crossed the Rainbow Bridge before Teddy was weaned and once again, foster parents Brandon and Nicole L. helped one of the babies make it through. During all of this, they became very attached to Sitka, Teddy, Loki and Kenai. I got word they wanted to adopt and sent the contracts over. Sitka, Teddy and Loki have been adopted as of 09/05/09, when we received the adoption contracts! We are so happy for everyone!

    Adopted September 2009

    Approx. 1996 sorrel grade gelding

Maverick came into BEHS almost a year ago as a somewhat untrained, approximately 12 year old stallion. He had (and still has), the most calm, nice disposition about him. We knew he was a good candidate to send for training to get him started under saddle - where he did well. After training, Maverick went to a new foster home. That is where Kellie G. met and really liked him. She thought he was going to be adopted, but later saw that he was still available on our site. Remembering that there was something special about this guy, she contacted us and quickly applied to adopt him. As soon as she that she was approved, she made arrangements to pick this special fellow up and take him to his new home.

For one reason or another, the other adoptions did not go through and Max went home yesterday to be a family/pleasure horse and pasture mate for Lulu, another adopted Bluebonnet horse. After getting a little info about his (appeared to be) club foot from foster mom, Gaye P., Michele knew she wanted him. I was told he was not always the easiest to catch and hoped he would be a good boy for Michele when she went to meet him. Luckily, Michele has worked with youngsters before and had no problem with RJ. She handled him like a pro and it was a good match from the get go! RJ went to his new home on Sunday. Look forward to watching him mature into a nice, pleasure/trail horse for his adoptive home.

    BEHS River

    Adopted November 2009

    1988 grade gelding

River came into Bluebonnet as a very thin stallion - but once rehabbed, he turned out to be a well mannered, nicely trained horse (2nd level dressage). He was adopted earlier this year. Due to time constraints of his adopter he was returned. They delivered him to the 2009 Bluebonent Horse Expo, where his abilities and beauty were seen by all. Govinda H. had already applied to adopt and was there, met him and immediately bonded with River. She and her daughter had waited a very long time to take on the responsiblity of horse ownership and to find the right horse. Looks like a perfect match! River left for his new life yesterday afternoon. His adoptive mom says it will be hard to keep his young adoptive 'sister' from sleeping in the barn with him at night!

    BEHS Roxy

    Adopted March 14, 2009

    2005 Miniature mare

Roxy came to BEHS after her owner died. His heirs did not care for Roxy and her herd, and the horses lost weight. When law enforcement arrived to investigate, the heirs surrendered Roxy and the rest of her group. She had not been handled much and was originally frightened of people. She came around and stole her foster homes hearts. They decided to make Roxy a permanent addition.

    BEHS Sadie

    Adopted March 2009

    Overo paint mare

Sadie was seized when she and her herd mates were found without food or water in January of 2008. She was leery and shy, but has come around with time. Sadie is a companion and can not be ridden, but that does not matter to her foster mom. Sadie won Cathy P.'s heart and was adopted this week! We are all so happy for Sadie to have her own family to enjoy her retirement with.

    BEHS Sam I Am

    Adopted June 2009

    2007 Paint gelding

Sam I Am came into the rescue in March of 2009, along with another horse, Beauty. Both were malnourished, but not unloved. Both horses were very handleable and loving. Sam I Am has always been such a love, a 'pocket horse' in that he would be your shadow whenever you were in his pen - much preferring people over the companionship of other horses. Sam I Am was visited by a very beautiful little 2-yr old girl named Faith (and her mother Anita, and brother Hunter) last Saturday. Faith was looking for a sweet, loving horse to call her own. A horse that would be her best friend while she grew up. Sam I Am saw little Faith, loved all over her, and even gave her his first human ride ever! Both 2-yr olds bonded immediately, and the decision was made! My sweet Sam I Am has been adopted by a wonderful family, and will be moving to his new home this coming weekend!

    BEHS 365- Santana

    Adopted November 2009

    1991 Bay Arabian gelding

Santana - another one of the 'Hopkins County 57' group was adopted by his foster mom, Tracy C. this week. Santana is another beautiful Arabian (now) gelding. Having been kept in a stall for at least a year (on top of four feet of manure), he was a bit anxious and had a hard time settling when he first arrived at Bluebonnet.Since, he has been gelded and settled with his new foster home. Through treating Santana for an eye problem, Tracy bonded with him and decided that he could/should stay right where he was and adopted him.

    BEHS 289- Savannah

    Adopted September 2009

    2007 grade mare

Savannah is a very cute young filly that loves people, attention, grooming, etc. and has a very willing attitude and sweet nature. Dennis and Carol D. had been looking for a companion for a young gelding they had (that happens to look a lot like Savannah). They came across BEHS, found Savannah on our site, read her bio and were sure she would be the perfect pasturemate for their gelding. They were very careful to choose a horse with a nice, calm temperament to match the gelding they already had, so that things would be peaceful - and because they have granchildren they want to teach about the love of horses. Savannah was the perfect one for them. She was adopted and left for her forever home just yesterday. Pictures to follow...

    BEHS 380 - Sebastian

    Adopted December 19, 2009

    Approx. 1996, bay, Arabian gelding

Sebastian, a very handsome, thirteen year old, Arabian gelding was adopted in December of 2009. His new mom had spent years caring for the horses of friends and family, but was ready for one of her own. She went to meet Sebastian and soon saw his sweet nature and calm disposition. After getting to know him a bit, Amanda J. knew he had found his person. She picked him up this afternoon. Last we heard, he was settled in for the night with a new pasturemate in the paddock next to him. Congratulations and Happy Trails to all!!

    BEHS 296- Sitka

    Adopted September 2009

    2003 grade mare

Skye then recovered and her foster family discovered she was broke to ride. She was adopted by a family who plans to use her for trail and pleasure riding.

Splash was born in November of 2008, barely two weeks after his dams arrival into Bluebonnet. She was a bit of a surprise, but a very cute one!! Splash wasn't even weaned when she had an application put in for her. Her foster home got her weaned from mom and adopted her as soon as she was ready to be made available. BEHS 293- Tanner

    Adopted October 10 2009

    2006 sorrel grade gelding

Tanner came into the rescue on October 10th of 2008 - and was adopted from the Expo, along with Aramis! Tanner is a very nice, calm, quiet young gelding that was sent to training by his foster mom, for 60 days. She knew and saw in him that he would be willing student and take well to his lessons. Tanner completed training and did very well. He was started under saddle and more appealing to potential adopters. Allison H-C (see Aramis above) had expressed an interest in Tanner too, before coming to the Expo. Allison was able to meet and visit with Tanner's foster mom and then test rode him too. She decided that she wanted to adopt him as well. Tanner's laid back personality might counter Aramis' more flighty side, she thought. While she ended up staying longer than she intended that day and was freezing by the time it was all said and done, Allison took home two beautiful young geldings with her on October 10, 2009. Exactly one year from the day Tanner came to us - on his one year anniversary - he found his new home! Tanner and Aramis bonded during the trailer ride home and have been best buddies since! We are sure that they will be riding trails together for many years to come!

    2005 black john mule

Tatertot is a 2005, gelded mule. He came to BEHS from a neglect case - when a volunteer showed up to investigate the report of neglect, he almost knocked her down in his eagerness to get to food. He quickly gained weight and turned into a gorgeous and friendly mule. He was adopted and is now the best friend of a gelding - they run and play together.

    2005 Miniature/pony cross mare

Twinkie and her little herd came into Bluebonnet in August of last year. They had not been handled in quite some time - some not at all. She is a pony/miniature cross - and was in attendance at the Expo in Austin this year. Meshelle R. met her there and immediately applied to adopt. She was approved and Twinkie went to her new home in this past weekend - where she will be used in an Equine Therapy program for children. No doubt she will get all the love and attention she needs! BEHS 364- Zezz

    Adopted October 10, 2009

    1987 Arabian gelding

Zezz came to BEHS in May 2009 along with fifty-six other horses as part of a neglect case. Zezz and the other stallions were all kept in stalls, and many of the stalls were several feet deep with compacted manure. They had little access to water and almost no food. When rescuers went to let them out of stalls, many of the latches on the stall doors were rusted shut. Zezz recovered, was gelded and began the long road to rehabilitation. He has a lip tattoo and from that we were able to determine that he had been raced twice as a young horse, coming in 1st and 3rd. After that, we’re not sure what training he had but his foster home found he was well-trained to ride and seemed to enjoy being ridden. His foster “mom” says he’s the happiest horse she’s ever known, always waiting at the gate for her with his ears up and a happy look on his face. Zezz’s adopters met him at the 2009 Bluebonnet Horse Expo and fell in love. They plan to use him for trail riding. Congrats to Zezz and the Haden family!

    BEHS Zoey

    Adopted March 31, 2009

    2007 Miniature horse filly

Frannie and Zoey were part of a herd of miniature horses whose owner died. He left the horses to family members who refused to care for them or part with them until they were investigated for neglect. Zoey was born after her owner passed away, and she had never been handled before arriving at BEHS. Frannie was so thin when she arrived that BEHS did not believe she would make it. Fortunately both mom and baby not only survived but thrived. Their foster home decided to adopt them and are training Frannie to drive.
