Bio:
Ribbon is a very special boy that needs a special family to love and care for him. He was removed from his negligent owners by law enforcement officers and awarded to BEHS by the courts. Upon arrival at his BEHS foster home, Ribbon was thin but not emaciated and is now at a good weight.
Ribbon was aggressive at dinnertime in his first foster home,
but subsequent foster homes have not seen this.
History:
Unknown. He has had some round pen
work in the past. Will wait for riding and additional testing until he
gains more weight and de-stresses.
Health/Lameness: Ribbon has some vision issues which means he relies heavily on an understanding handler. Texas A&M did a vision check and found that there is some nerve damage but the limitation of his sight is unknown. It appears that he can see things moving in the distance (e.g. dogs in the field) but has problems focusing “close up”. This limitation makes him “jumpy” and fearful of new activities.
He may have limited vision in one eye. No other problems known.
Abilities:
Ribbon may have been a well-trained horse at one time. He lifts his feet automatically and once his routine is set, performs other actions automatically. However, because of his loss of vision, he needs calm, consistent handling. He has a tendency to kick if he is frightened by a new activity. His handler must be someone who is patient with a horse that is trying to overcome a new adversity. Because of Ribbon's vision problems and difficulties adjusting to them, he is available as a companion (non-riding) horse only.
Other: Ribbon is looking for a forever home that will help him learn to deal with his limited vision. He needs someone that understands he’s frightened and trying to cope. He is an extremely intelligent horse that is an easy keeper, has great feet, and a big heart!
