Dr. Jennifer Williams, former president and co-founder of Lone Star Equine Rescue, has partnered with horse enthusiasts across Texas and Arkansas to create Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society, Inc. (BEHS). BEHS incorporated in Texas and Arkansas in March 2005 and plans to improve the lives of equines by educating and helping owners, assisting law enforcement agencies, rehabilitating abused and neglected equines, and placing them into safe, permanent homes.

BEHS is off to a running start. Dr. Jennifer Williams, President has not only has spoken on the subject of Horse Rescue and Retirement at the American Quarter Horse Convention on March 12 in St. Louis, Missouri, where she proudly announced the formation of the organization. Then on April 19, 2005, she also spoke in an educational session preceding at the Unwanted Horse Summit in Washington DC. The summit was hosted by the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) and served as a catalyst for identifying long-term solutions designed to improve the quality of life of unwanted horses.

A large part of the “unwanted horse problem” is the large number of equines sold throughout the United States each year to one of the three slaughterhouses that process equines for human consumption. As many concerned with equine welfare debate The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, the horse industry has begun to address the reasons horses end up at the slaughter house.

BEHS is proud to be involved in the solution to this distressing problem by allowing owners to donate horses and other equines to the organization as an alternative to auctions and the slaughter house. Additionally, BEHS plans to work with law enforcement agencies to investigate reports of abuse and neglect and to assist officers in removing equines from neglectful homes.

Through the use of committees, BEHS hopes to enlist the assistance and expertise of members in running the organization. A PR Committee has been formed to promote the organization, a Fundraising Committee will plan fundraisers, and Corporate Sponsorship Committee will develop a corporate sponsorship program and solicit sponsorships from Texas and Arkansas companies. Several other committees will govern other aspects of the organization’s activities. Members are also encouraged to give input on the policies and procedures of the organization and to volunteer to establish new programs for the rescue.

Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society needs your help in order to help the horses and other equines who need them. Consider supporting BEHS with a financial contribution (the organization’s 501(c)(3) status is pending) or by becoming a member. BEHS also needs foster homes and volunteers to help with trailering, fundraising, and PR.
