On February 28, 2005, a group
of concerned horse enthusiasts in Texas and Arkansas came
together to form Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society (BEHS).
Their mission was to improve the lives of horses and other
equine animals by educating and helping owners, assisting
law enforcement agencies, rehabilitating abused and
neglected equines, and placing them into safe, adoptive
homes. The founding members possessed a wealth of equine
rescue experience, and several were trained animal abuse and
neglect investigators.
Although Arkansas does not have
many equine rescue organizations, several rescues existed
across Texas, and some horsemen believed there was no need
for BEHS. However, in their first year of operation, the
rescue has proven them wrong. BEHS has investigated over 75
reports of horse and equine neglect, and they have worked
with law enforcement officers to remove neglected horses,
donkeys, and mules from negligent owners in several cases.
The rescue took in 79 horses in the first year of operation,
and 15 of those were placed into new adoptive homes. The
remaining equines are either available for adoption or still
recuperating from past abuse and neglect.
BEHS members are looking
forward to the next year of operation. They have planned
several fundraising events – including virtual horse shows,
several open horse shows, an adopt-a-thon and silent
auction, and much ore.
New members are always welcome.
If you are interested in making a difference in the lives of
needy equines, the Bluebonnet Family has room for you! BEHS
invites horse enthusiasts to join them and help make their
second year of operation an even bigger success than the
first year.
