About Flame

Flame was placed with Bluebonnet when his breeder, an elderly man, could no longer keep him. He was well loved in his life but not handled much due to his breeder’s age. He has spent much of the past several years in a 10x20 foot stall, so he’s now getting used to turn out and being around other horses. Flame was gelded in late February 2023.

Evaluation and Training

When Flame arrived, he had not been handled much. His initial foster home taught him to be caught in a stall and in a paddock and began refining his leading skills. He then went to a trainer for the 2023 Training Challenge. She further worked on his groundwork and taught him to lunge. Unfortunately, she had to withdraw from the Challenge competition and did not get him started under saddle.

He was again assigned to a pro for the 2024 Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge, but that pro had to withdraw after having Flame about two months. He had only worked on groundwork and hadn't gotten Flame started under saddle. However, he said Flame is now easy to catch, loads into a trailer by himself, and stands tied for grooming. He could pick up all four feet for cleaning and bathe Flame, but his farrier had been unable to trim his back hooves without sedation.

He also taught Flame to wear a western saddle and a snaffle bit and lunge at a walk, trot, and canter.

Flame is a smart, sweet horse. He's been turned out with both mares and geldings and done fine. At his current him, he's fairly low in the herd hierarchy.

Flame has a swayback. It does not seem to hurt or cause him any problems, but it will make saddle fitting difficult. Because of his, he could be adopted as a companion or in hand obstacle or agility horse or for liberty. For in hand work, he needs a novice handler. If someone wanted to take the time to find a fitting saddle and start him under saddle, he could be started under saddle as well.
