About Charlie

Charlie, and his brother Carlos, were owned by one person for most of their lives. They were beloved pets, but as she was aging, she believed she needed to rehome them. They are bonded and must be adopted together.

In August 2024, Charlie tested positive for Cushing's. He's currently one a half of a Prascend once per day. Prior to being tested, he had foundered. Because of his previous founder and Cushing's, he must be kept on a dirt lot with minimum grain.

Evaluation and Training

Charlie and Carlos are 27 years old - but don't let that scared you away. Donkeys, especially miniatures, tend to be long-lived so 27 isn't old. And the boys get offended if you tell them they're old.

They've been together all of their lives, and while they're not always joined at the hip, they would be far too sad apart. So we're adopting them as a pair.

These are some of the nicest little donks you'll ever meet.

They both are easy to catch, they lead well, they stand for the farrier, and while they're happier outside they're also ok hanging out in a stall together. They don't mind being in with horses or ponies, but they don't hang out with them much.

Both of them love attention. Charlie will press his head into your stomach gently and hang out there as long as you'll let him and as long as you keep on petting him. Carlos isn't quite as 'in your lap', but he likes petting. And they both like it when you talk to them and tell them how amazing they are (really, they do!).

They sound practically perfect in every way, right? The only "not so perfect" bit is that Charlie has Cushings and gets half a pill per day. He doesn't like it in his food, so we give him a bite of food, then put the pill into his mouth, and then give him another bite. And we pet him and tell him we're sorry he has to take medicine, but we just want him to be happy and healthy!

Because mini donkeys are prone to founder when out on pasture (they were made to live in deserts), we want these guys kept in a dirt lot. We know it doesn't look as pretty seeing them on dirt, but it is what keeps them happy and healthy.

They're adoption fee is $800 (for the pair), they're up to date on vaccinations and Coggins and dental work. Their feet don't need much trimming - our farrier checks them each time she comes and occasionally rasps a little bit but that's all.
