About Dawson
Dawson is a big, 16h, chestnut Thoroughbred with a heart of gold. He loves snuggles, scratches, and making his people laugh with his playful personality. This sweet, curious boy is as gorgeous as he is kind! He was placed with us by his owner who couldn’t keep him.
Dawson is competing in the Non-Pro Under Saddle Division of the Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge with Ruth Escajeda. Dawson will be available for adoption on October 4, 2025, during the Bluebonnet Training Challenge and Expo at the Williamson County Expo Center in Taylor, TX. Evaluation and Training
Personality & Manners:
- Playful with a fun sense of humor
- Curious and people-oriented — wants to be by your side
- Social with other horses, especially mares
Training & Abilities:
- Ties patiently and stands nicely for grooming, tacking, and bathing
- Learning patience at feeding time
- Drops his head politely for haltering and releasing
- Loads in the trailer with patience, still building confidence
- Moves off pressure, backs up, and is learning to ground tie
- Lunges at walk, trot, and canter
- Ridden in the round pen at walk and trot
- Does great on trails with other horses
- Gets nervous in arenas, especially unfamiliar ones, and acts out if not right next to a familiar horse. This is likely because he’s young and green and he can learn to work through this with a confident intermediate or above rider.
- Stands well for baths, blanketing, and general handling
- Enjoys regular grooming
Background & Care:
- Currently wears front shoes (rocky Central Texas terrain caused chipping)
- Dawson seems to love trail riding but arenas make him nervous. He’ll try to stick right next to other horses and will be balky when ridden away from them and will make a small rear (a foot or so off the ground) if forced to stand still away from them.
Why He’s Amazing:
Dawson is amazing because he’s the perfect blend of beauty, heart, and personality. He is a gentle, affectionate soul who loves to snuggle and be near his people. He’s curious, playful, and has a great sense of humor, often “helping” with stall cleaning or making his foster laugh with his antics. Smart and willing, Dawson is quick to learn and tries hard to please, whether it’s working on groundwork, heading down the trail, or just being groomed. He’s pretty enough, too, to become a show horse with more training. With his kind nature and eagerness to connect, Dawson is a true partner in the making.
