(April 4, 2007; Rosharon, Texas) Today Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society announced the winners of the organization’s 2007 Hero Awards. The purpose of the Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society Hero Awards is to honor individuals who make an extraordinary contribution to the welfare of horses, donkeys and mules throughout Texas and Arkansas through their interaction with the organization.
This year the organization is awarding just three of the prestigious awards:
- Lacy Orphin Finn of Lewisville, Texas – During 2006, Lacy shared her writing, graphics design, photography and newsletter editing talents to help promote Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society’s adoption program. She distributed press releases and articles about Bluebonnet horses to newspapers throughout the state of Texas and helped increase awareness of rescue horses and adoption and created a new masthead for the Bluebonnet Bulletin, the organization’s newsletter.
- Toni James of Decatur, Texas – Toni is a professional horse trainer who served both the horses and foster homes of Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society. She donated her time to teach a clinic to the organization’s foster homes in order to teach them how to better handle their foster horses, thus making them more adoptable. She also offered hands-on assistance to foster homes who were having problems with their foster horses. Additionally, she has taken in horses previously labeled “dangerous” by other trainers and helped to reform them so that they can find adoptive homes.
- Greg Knape, DVM of Alvin, Texas – Dr. Knape was nominated by Ralph Pinnell. Since Bluebonnet’s inception, Dr. Knape has served as a veterinarian for foster homes in Alvin. He has provided invaluable knowledge and assistance to help treat the organization’s horses.
Each Hero will receive a plaque awarded during a ceremony as well as a year’s membership in Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society.
Bluebonnet’s Executive Director, Dr. Jennifer Williams says, “We are so pleased to recognize the accomplishments of these individuals. They are instrumental in helping us help hundreds of previously neglected and abused horses recover and find loving adoptive homes.”
Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of horses, donkeys and mules throughout Texas and Arkansas. With the help of these Heroes and the organizations’ dedicated members, the organization helps many starving, injured and unwanted animals get a second chance at life.
