Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society Receives $5,000 Grant from the ASPCA to Help Needy Horses
Grant to provide training to help horses find good adopters
College Station, Texas —The Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society (BEHS) today announced that it had received a grant from the ASPCA®. The grant money is split between two programs: half will be used as partial funding for the Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge and the other half will be used to send rescued horses to trainers to evaluate their previous training, correct behavioral problems, and provide riding training.
“Our horses come to us from law enforcement cases. They are neglected, abused, and stray. We don’t know how much if any, the training they’ve received before coming to us. At the same time, many potential adopters are looking for a horse they can take home and start riding. They don’t have the experience or the desire to invest a lot of time in figuring out what the horse knows or in training him,” said Dr. Jennifer Williams, Executive Director of BEHS. “This grant allows us to find out what our horses know and provide the training that will help them find new homes.”
“The ASPCA is grateful to rescue groups like the Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society who step in to care for and rehabilitate horses who have been abused or neglected,” said Jacque Schultz, senior director of the ASPCA Equine Fund. “We are pleased to award them this grant to assist their efforts to protect horses in need, and we applaud their commitment to equine training.”
The Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge is a competition in which trainers as well as amateur horsemen and horsewomen work with a rescued horse for four months and then compete over an obstacle course and in a freestyle competition. Horses competing in the Challenge are then offered to the public for adoption. This year’s Challenge and adoption event take place on October 22, 2016, at the Travis County Expo Center in Austin, TX.

Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society is a non-profit, equine welfare organization that was founded in 2005 to help horses throughout Texas. The organization primarily focuses on law enforcement cases: working with law enforcement to investigate neglect/abuse complaints, educate owners when possible, and remove and rehabilitate horses when necessary. Since 2005, BEHS has taken in over 820 horses and rehomed nearly 700 of them.
