(July 13, 2010; Wilson County, Texas) On June 20, 2010 Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society received a complaint about several starving horses located near Stockdale, Texas. Bluebonnet volunteers worked with Wilson County Sheriff’s deputies to investigate the case and then move the five horses from the property to a safe holding facility.
Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society officials say that they worked with Wilson County to remove two other horses from the same owner in December of 2009. In that case, one horse died from the effects of long-term starvation. The other horse, a yearling colt, is now healthy and available for adoption.
On July 13, 2010 Bluebonnet volunteer Tracy Cann, sheriff’s deputies and the owner of the horses met in court for a hearing to determine whether or not the horses were neglected. The owner agreed to sign the horses over to the rescue and to not own horses in the future. He still faces two charges of animal cruelty from the December 2009 case.
Bluebonnet President Jennifer Williams says they were happy to be able to help in this case, but that they cannot always help the horses who need them. “We’re a primarily volunteer-run organization, and the volunteers house all the horses we take in. We need more foster homes in order to be able to continue helping needy horses. I don’t ever want to turn starving horses away.”
Williams adds that these horses would not have gotten the help they did without the assistance of the citizens who made the neglect complaint, the sheriff’s deputies who worked the case, and the district attorney’s office who insured that the horses would remain safe.
