About Chico

Chico was removed from negligent owners and placed with Bluebonnet. Chico placed 3rd in the 12 and under in hand division of the Rescue Horse Training Challenge at the 2019 Bluebonnet Horse Expo and met his adopter at the event. He was returned in July 2022, through no fault of this own.

He was adopted again in 2023 but returned because his young rider lost interest.

Evaluation and Training

When Chico first came to Bluebonnet in 2019, he was shy and nervous with new people, but you wouldn’t know that now. He’s good to catch, lead, and load. He stands tied and is good for baths, fly spray, and the farrier. He’s been ridden by several children, but he’s not a beginner kids’ horse as he did begin bucking or crow-hopping with some less experienced child riders.

However, for a confident child with some riding experience, he’s an awesome pony. His 2022 youth Training Challenge partner rode him on trails, over obstacles, over cavaletti, and at shows. He should make some lucky kid a great show or trail pony – he’s just looking for his person!

Chico won 1st Place in the Basic Skills Competition at the 2022 Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge. He has also competed in hand obstacles and in riding classes at local shows.

Chico is back with his Training Challenge partner for some work after being returned. They’re currently riding at a walk and trot in the arena and on trails with no problems. He does buck occasionally at the canter, especially with less experienced rider.
