About Jellybean
Jellybean was picked up by the Houston SPCA as part of a large group of neglected horses. She was transferred to Bluebonnet for halter training/gentling, rehabilitation, and eventual rehoming.
She had not been handled before coming to Bluebonnet, other than to be run through a chute for veterinary work. She learned pretty quickly to enjoy petting and hangs her head over her stall for almost anyone to pet, but it has taken her longer to come around to being caught and leading. She's a smart horse and pretty brave, and she is now improving daily.
Evaluation and Training
Jellybean had not been handled prior to coming to Bluebonnet other than to be rounded up to be loaded and run through a chute for a Coggins. She's pretty cautious, so although she accepted petting fairly soon, it took her longer to accept being haltered and learning to lead.
She's friendly with visitors to the barn, hanging her head over her stall door for pets. She has learned to be caught and to lead. She's learned to navigate a few trail obstacles in hand, and at the end of July she stood while the farrier picked up each hoof, cleaned it out, and used the nippers. She will continue to need a patient farrier as she continues to learn.
She stands tied, for grooming, for fly spray, and to have her hooves picked up.. She also loads in a trailer. At this point, she's not for a novice or a child - she needs someone willing to work with her consistently to reinforce her training and build a bond. But she loves attention and people. She's cautious, but if you give her time to think through new situations she adjusts well. She's young enough, too, that she shouldn't be started under saddle for a few years so she's a great age to adopt, bond, and work on ground work.
She may initially regress a bit with a new person, but she should come around quickly.
