About Loretta

Loretta had one owner her entire life, who passed away. She was going to be sent to auction, but a kind family stepped up and took her in. They had her for a year before falling onto hard times causing them to have to downsize so they donated Loretta to Bluebonnet.

Loretta is competing in the In-Hand 13 and Over of the Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge with Larkin Bundine. Loretta will be available for adoption at the Training Challenge competition on October 7, 2023, during the Bluebonnet Horse Expo at the Williamson County Expo Center. You can follow their progress on their Facebook page CLICK HERE

The Expo and Training Challenge will be held on October 7, 2023 at the Williamson County Expo Center in Taylor, Texas. For more information about the Expo CLICK HERE, or for information about adopting a challenge horse CLICK HERE.

Evaluation and Training

We did not know much about Loretta’s history or training when she came to us. Her former owner said she was a riding horse, and we had a trainer evaluate her in August 2021. He said she was cinchy, and the cinch should be tightened slowly to make her more comfortable. She did fine to ride and showed no resistance. However, he noticed a slight lameness in her left hock. Because of this, she’s available as a leadline or light riding horse.

Loretta spent four months with trainer Brittany Berchok in 2022 preparing for the Training Challenge. Due to her age, Brittany focused on ground work: Loretta’s leading, backing, and handling skills improved. Brittany introduced her to obstacles and hauled her to new facilities. She did ride her some but said Loretta tossed her head or balked when pushed to do much. Because of her age, we think she could be ok for very light riding (walking occasionally) or as a leadline horse. Otherwise, she would really love to be a pet and companion. She would love to be spoiled with petting and grooming!

Loretta’s first foster home was a novice with horses, and she says Loretta was great to handle!

Loretta competed in the In Hand Division of the 2022 Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge. She placed 2nd in the Freestyle competition and 2nd in the Basic Skills competition in her division.
