About Benji
Benji was donated to Bluebonnet when his owner couldn’t keep him. He was adopted pretty quickly by someone who met him at his foster home. She returned him several months later. Once he was healthier, he was a pretty energetic horse and too much for her.
Benji was returned to Bluebonnet in February of 2022 through no fault of his own.
Benji was participating in the Fall 2022 Training Challenge but his trainer quickly fell in love with him and adopted him. Congratulations Benji and Neil!!!
Evaluation and Training
We don’t know anything about Benji before he came to Bluebonnet, but it seems he was ridden at one point. His original adopter returned him because she said he was a lot of horse under saddle. His foster home says he can be pushy – he’s a big horse and knows he’s big. Her daughter has ridden him in the round pen where he did great. He was very unsure outside the round pen and didn’t want to leave the other horses. They’re going to keep working with him.
His trainer reports that Benji has been a joy to work with. He has awesome ground manners, fly spray, picks up his feet, meets you at the gate. Kids can handle him, I let my 9-year-old lunge him and he even rides under supervision. He walks, trots, canters, backs up and side passes. He can open gates. We are working every day. We've even been working on jumping. He moves really nicely too.
The ideal adopter is going to be someone who is going to ride several days a week. They are also going to be a somewhat confident rider. He has a lot of go still, so a quick lunge before riding is advisable. He is a big guy, so I even need a mounting block. He responds to being ridden in English, I use a snaffle, a running martingale and an English saddle. I also use breakover shoes to help him.
