Background
Margarita came to Bluebonnet after spending a year at the Houston SPCA, where she had been surrendered through a cruelty investigation, leaving much of her early history unknown. Understandably, she arrived defensive and fearful of handling. Over time, dedicated fosters and trainers have helped her learn to trust, be caught, handled, and begin her training journey. She was adopted in early 2024 and later returned through no fault of her own, and she continues to make steady progress as she rebuilds confidence with patient, consistent care. Margarita is a sensitive, intelligent mare who wants to connect, and her story reflects both the trauma she has endured and the remarkable resilience she carries forward.
Personality & Manners
- Watchful around unfamiliar people; may retreat to the far pasture until she feels safe.
- Approaches her person for attention and companionship once trust is established.
- Sweet, affectionate, and deeply connected to her handler when she feels secure.
- She does well with mares and geldings.
Training & Abilities
- Can be caught in pasture with patience and treats.
- Easy to halter once caught.
- Stands tied for hoof cleaning, grooming, and baths.
- Lunges at a walk, trot, and canter on lunge line.
- Stands for fly spray.
- Lunges in the round pen at walk, trot, and canter in both directions.
- Introduced to obstacles and handles them thoughtfully.
- Loads into a trailer when led inside; familiar with slant‑load trailers.
- Actively working on standing quietly for the farrier and improving with consistency.
- Margarita was started under saddle but her adopted stopped riding her after a kissing spines diagnosis. If she was cleared to ride again, she would need to be restarted and would need an advanced rider to bring her along.
Care Needs & Behavior
- Benefits from consistent routines and regular handling.
- Does best with a calm environment and a handler who reads her body language well.
- Enjoys groundwork and learns steadily with repetition.
- Suitable for someone who enjoys bringing along a project horse with a good mind.
- A previous adopter reported that this mare may have kissing spine, but BEHS does not have veterinary records or diagnostic imaging to confirm this. Because we cannot verify the condition and because she is a horse who needs time, patience, and a strong bond with her person before she feels confident, we believe a companion‑only home is the best and safest fit for her.
Why This Horse is Amazing
Margarita is amazing because she is the kind of horse who rewards patience with a truly meaningful bond. Despite a past marked by fear and uncertainty, she has shown tremendous resilience and a deep desire to connect. Once she trusts you, she becomes affectionate, attentive, and genuinely enjoys being near her person. Since she takes time to warm up is why we recommend companion only. The progress she has made—allowing grooming, seeking attention, approaching in the pasture, and trying her best even when she’s unsure—speaks volumes about her heart. Margarita is a special mare who will thrive with someone who values partnership, empathy, and patience.
