About Indy
Indy is a pretty girl, brightly copper-colored in the summer. Looking at her now, it is hard to believe she was removed from negligent owners and placed with Bluebonnet. It is also hard to believe she was underweight, and needed a lot of care: deworming, farrier care, and veterinary attention.
We’re not sure what Indy’s previous life was like, but we’re pretty sure it wasn’t good. She carries scarring across her hindquarters, believed by her veterinarian to be scars from some kind of burn. While she dislikes having a brush run over them, she enjoys gentle rubbing and massage in those areas.
When Indy arrived, she was very leery of humans and withdrawn. She really seemed to have given up on people. But thanks to the care and gentle handling of her foster homes, she’s come out of her shell and understands that people can be good as well.
Despite her rough start, Indy has transformed into a brave, intelligent, and engaging partner. She competed in the 2024 Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge’s In-Hand Division, where she placed 6th overall in a large class, 3rd in Basic Skills, and 6th in the Obstacle Course.
Indy is competing in the Non-Pro Under Saddle Division of the Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge with Parker Bills. Indy will be available for adoption on October 4, 2025, during the Bluebonnet Training Challenge and Expo at the Williamson County Expo Center in Taylor, TX. Evaluation and Training
Personality & Manners:
- Sweet and affectionate once she trusts you
- Food-motivated but polite (never pushy for treats)
- Vocal, especially around mealtime
- Enjoys attention and has a soft spot for kids
- Does well with mares and foals – has been fine with geldings in some foster homes and overly interested in them in others
- Gets along best with calm pasture mates; introduced successfully to chickens, goats, dogs, and cats
Training & Abilities:
- Ridden at the walk and trot in both English and Western tack
- Will canter from time to time but prefers not to; trainers continue working to improve this, but she will buck so we recommend walk and trot only if ridden
- Has been ridden bareback at the walk
- Introduced to shows, trails, obstacles, and other arenas
- Enjoys patterns and obstacle work
- Liberty work: performs circles, side passing, direction changes, and reading clues from her trainer
- Has competed successfully in liberty classes, bringing home ribbons including a 1st place
- Groundwork: lunges on-line and in round pen at walk, trot, canter
- Trailer loads (sometimes self-loads)
- Stands for grooming, farrier, hoof cleaning, fly spray
- Learning to ground tie
- Sensitive to pressure but improving with consistent, patient handling
- Better with saddling when not tied (can feel claustrophobic)
- Does not tie for baths
- Building confidence under saddle — prefers a light, sympathetic rider
Background & Care:
- Arrived with scars across hindquarters, likely from old burns (not painful, but she dislikes brushing over them)
- Diagnosed with osteoarthritis in her neck in 2024; bodywork has helped keep her comfortable
- Available for walk/trot under saddle, liberty work, and/or in hand obstacles
- Needs an adopter who will take time to get to know her and build trust
Why She’s Amazing:
Indy is the definition of resilience. From being abandoned and scarred, she has grown into a curious, willing, and brave mare who shines brightest when she feels safe with her person. She has already proven herself in liberty classes, obstacles, and pattern work, and she’s been successfully introduced to shows, trails, and new arenas. While cantering isn’t her favorite job, she gives her best when asked and enjoys thoughtful, light to moderate riding (no play days, jumping, endurance). With her big heart, intelligence, and playful spirit, Indy is ready to be someone’s special horse. Indy will give back tenfold in trust and love.
