About Spruce
Spruce was rescued by another organization and then transferred to Bluebonnet. Not much is known about his history before being rescued, and the other rescue did not handle him or work with him much before sending him to Bluebonnet. His foster reports that he can be pushy on the ground and a bit buddy sour, but they are working on it.
Spruce is competing in the Professional Division of the Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge with Madison Amason. Spruce will be available for adoption at the Training Challenge competition on October 5, 2024, during the Bluebonnet Horse Expo at the Williamson County Expo Center. You can follow their progress on their Facebook page CLICK HERE
The Expo and Training Challenge will be held on October 5, 2024, at the Williamson County Expo Center in Taylor, Texas. For more information about the Expo CLICK HERE, or for information about adopting a challenge horse CLICK HERE.
Evaluation and Training
Spruce’s foster home has been working with him since he arrived. He’s a cute guy who seems to like attention, but he may not have had a ton of handling before he got to her. She can catch him and lead him, and he loads in a trailer. He recently had his hooves trimmed for the first time and did well, but he would benefit from a patient farrier who can give him more good experiences. His foster home has been able to put a saddle pad on him with no problems but hasn’t yet tried to saddle him.
Spruce currently lunges on or off a line. He ground ties, and ties to a trailer or patience pole. At this time in his training his trainer has only sat and walked around the round pen on his back. So far, he is doing incredible.
Spruce's trainer has been riding him at a walk, trot, and canter, navigating trail obstacles, riding in an arena, and around other horses. His trainer says he loves to be ridden, and truly believes he looks forward to attention every day. He is always in a great mood, and he loves learning new things. I think with more experience, education, and exposure, he could make a great trail and / or ranch horse. We could even see him being a great youth horse with the right child and trainer.
