Evaluation and Training

Goose came to Bluebonnet from another rescue who said he was broke to ride. When he arrived at his Training Challenge partner’s home, he was much more horse than we were told. He was spooky and hard to handle. We sent him to trainer Courtney Fain for an evaluation and training in the summer of 2023.

Courtney has worked with Goose and says his behavior on the ground is much improved. He acted terrified of the saddle when he arrived, but he can now be saddled and bridled with a hackamore, although it may take a few minutes. When Courtney and her husband began working with him once he was more comfortable with the saddle, he would buck as soon as they put a foot in the stirrup. They’ve worked through that and have progressed to leaning over his back, but he is still very nervous and worried.

Goose needs a confident and experienced person, he really needs "his" person. His trainer thinks he's the type of horse that has someone just for him who he will really trust and flourish with. He needs someone with lots of love to give and even more patience. He has come a long way from where we started especially on his groundwork and needs someone who will continue his training. Someone who understands and laughs at the fact he will snort at you like you're the boogie monster for a good while until he gets to know you.

Goose is a BIG handsome guy; he turns heads when people see him and is built to the 9's. He does not have a mean bone in his body... but he is reactive. His biggest fear is people, although he is getting much better and learning that people can be good with a gentle touch and sometimes even cookies! On the ground his trainer has seen big improvements and even when he does get spooked, he slows down and thinks through it. He has also made progress under saddle.

We think he could excel at a number of things such as ranch halter, in hand classes, obstacles and liberty. His trainer noticed a big change when working on some basic liberty techniques with him and thinks he would do excellent with a trainer who knows a little bit more about liberty.

He is trying hard to overcome his fears and he wants so badly to please, he just needs that perfect person to continue his training and really show off what he can do.
