About Queenie

Transferred from another rescue, Queenie arrived in early June 2023 with her weeks-old foal, Major, by her side. Upon arrival, this pretty mare had a poor topline with prominent ribs. Queenie quickly gained weight and is in great shape now.

Queenie is competing in the Non-Pro Under Saddle Division of the Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge with Brooklyn Battenfield. Queenie will be available for adoption at the Training Challenge competition on October 5, 2024, during the Bluebonnet Horse Expo at the Williamson County Expo Center. You can follow their progress on their Facebook page CLICK HERE

The Expo and Training Challenge will be held on October 5, 2024, at the Williamson County Expo Center in Taylor, Texas. For more information about the Expo CLICK HERE, or for information about adopting a challenge horse CLICK HERE.

Evaluation and Training

Initially, Queenie was very skittish and afraid of humans. After her arrival, it took three days to halter her, and she had a tendency to bolt instead of leading correctly. With time, Queenie calmed down and became more willing. She is approachable in the field and can be haltered/led easily. She has loaded in a trailer and has been tied for short periods of time. Queenie is leery of having her legs handled, so lifting her feet to trim her hooves is a challenge.

True to her name, Queenie ranks rather high in the hierarchy of the herd, which consists of geldings, other mares, and weanlings. She also shares a pasture with cattle, deer, dogs, emus, ducks, and geese. With additional training, this mare has the potential to be a good riding partner.

When Queenie first came to us, she was pretty nervous and had some trouble catching but quickly adjusted, she now meets you at the gate and has no problem catching. She didn’t know how to pick her up feet and tried to kick a few times but she’s doing better and is learning how to hold her feet up. She stands for grooming and baths. She’s learning ground games and can walk over bridges and tarps. Her trainer has started her under saddle, and she is now being ridden in a round pen. She is turning out really nice and is learning very fast.
