Major’s Training Challenge partner would like to thank Freedom Acres Ranch and Allen Equine for sponsoring Major during the 2024 Training Challenge.

Evaluation and Training

Initially, Major was skittish, but his shyness wore off quickly as he gained confidence. In an about-face, he now craves attention and is in your pocket. He can be touched all over and enjoys being brushed. This colt will come up from the pasture when called and readily stick his nose in a halter. Leading Major is no problem. He has been tied with other horses for short periods of time and loaded in a trailer. Due to regular practice, Major now is a friend of the farrier. He gives all four feet to be trimmed, with only occasional lapses. As is the case with any weanling, his basic skills will require consistent reinforcement over time.

Major is inquisitive and possesses an affable personality. He gets along with dogs and cats, plus he shared a pasture with mares, geldings, emus, ducks, and resident deer at his initial foster home. He has never offered to kick nor harm his handler in any way. This slick dude is full of energy and moves beautifully. Without a doubt, Major has the potential to grow into an exceptional horse.

Major is getting ready for the training Challenge and is learning lots of new things. He is doing well with baths and accepting fly spray. He is learning about attending shows with his foster home.

Major has learned that horse trailers can be fun and has loaded by himself in all kinds of trailers from stock to straight load trailers. Major has learned to walk, trot, and canter in both directions in a round pen and on a lounge line. Major has gone on several field trips and even shown in showmanship classes. He is learning how to line drive. Major has learned liberty and is doing well with his trainer. Major has a great foundation and will continue to improve. We want him to go to a home where he won't be started under saddle until late in his three-year-old or early into his four-year-old year. This gives him the best chance to grow strong and healthy and allows his body to properly develop to carry weight. Major and his adopter can still have tons of fun together doing other things and they'll have an amazing bond when it comes time to start him under saddle!

Major is too young to start under saddle, at this time.
