About Winter

Winter came to Bluebonnet when her owner could no longer care for her. She is sweet and loves attention.

Evaluation and Training

Winter is a sweet mare and comes to you in the pasture. As with many drafts, she can be a little pushy with her weight so needs a handler that knows how to stay safe when handling a large horse. She isn’t mean about it but doesn’t pay close attention to where the people's feet are.

Winter’s former owner said she was told she was broke to drive, but we don’t believe she has been. Her foster home has drafts that she drives, and she tried to harness Winter and said she acted like she had never seen a harness before. She also does not appear to be broke to ride. She will stand to be saddled, but she does not like being bridled and especially hates a bit. She will throw her head up or try to push you away. After her foster home worked with her a little, she did better, accepted the bit and started giving to pressure.

She doesn’t appear to be trained to ride, though. She didn’t mind being saddled or patted and rubbed over her back, but she got nervous and moved away when her foster home wiggled the saddle or tried to put a foot in the stirrup. Her foster home believes she would be easy to start from where she is, but she will need an experienced person since she’s also pretty pushy on the ground and will walk over you if you let her, so even on the ground, she’s not a beginner horse. However, if you know how to handle a big pushy horse, she is a sweetie. She does like attention.
