About Amarillo
Amarillo came to Bluebonnet from law enforcement as part of a neglect case. Although she was very underweight when she arrived, she’s blossomed with good veterinary and farrier care and a healthy refeeding program. She’s now a gorgeous mare who anyone would be lucky to call their own!
Amarillo is competing in the In-Hand 12 and Under Division of the Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge with Pyper Davis. Amarillo will be available for adoption on October 4, 2025, during the Bluebonnet Training Challenge and Expo at the Williamson County Expo Center in Taylor, TX. Evaluation and Training
Personality & Manners:
- Loves treats and is food-motivated, which helps in training
- Loads and hauls easily
- Stands tied, grooms easily, and is a favorite for farrier work (picks up all four feet like a pro)
- Calm around livestock and wildlife—ducks, chickens, goats, even deer—though she prefers human company above all
- Gets along well with both mares and geldings
- Easy going in a herd, not interested in fussing over pecking order
Training & Abilities:
- Exceptionally well-mannered, responsive, and forgiving under saddle
- Can be ridden in a bit or rope halter
- Takes a saddle and bridle with no issues, stands quietly for tacking and grooming
- Has been ridden walk, trot, and canter in round pen, arena, open pasture, and out on trails
- Willing with obstacles and improving each session (cones, patterns, etc.)
- Confident enough for lessons and even preparing for her first show
- Great with bareback riding—kids have safely enjoyed her in arena and pasture
- Enjoys lessons, obstacles, and steady work but also appreciates some quiet time
Background & Care:
- Diagnosed with Cushing’s, well-managed with one daily pill
- Has an old scar on back right leg, but she is sound
- Sometimes eats too quickly; soaking grain helps prevent choke
Why She’s Amazing:
Amarillo is truly a gem: steady, kind, and people oriented. She has just enough spark to keep rides fun but is forgiving and safe for kids to ride and handle under adult supervision. She’s the type of horse who builds confidence in riders while still enjoying her own growth and training.
