About Mika
Mika was removed from negligent owners by law enforcement and placed with BEHS by the courts. Mika was adopted after the 2011 Bluebonnet Horse Expo but returned in 2013 because she was too green for her adopters to handle.
Splish Splash, Dulce, and Mika were all adopted by the Whitaker family! These girls all came to BEHS a few years ago from separate neglect cases. They were adopted previously but recently returned. The Whitaker family offered to foster them, but they quickly decided to go ahead and give the girls a home! She was returned in 2019 through no fault of hers.
Mika participated in the Non Pro Under Saddle division of the Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge in May 2019. She did well at the event and was adopted!
Evaluation and Training
When Mika came to BEHS, she was not halter broke and had not been handled. She received little handling at her foster home until she moved to a new foster home in March 2011. When she arrived at that foster home, she was leery of new people and easily startled/spooked. She spent the month of July 2011 with a professional trainer who spent a lot of time desensitizing her to sudden movements and new sights. He also started her under saddle. He said she didn't really like arena work and avoided contact with the bit, but he said she was a star on the trail. She went through or over anything he pointed her at and he feels she could be an excellent trail horse even for a fairly new rider as long as the rider was confident.
Her second adopter said that both her daughter and grand daughter rode Mika and she did well. She hadn’t been ridden in a while, so she’s spent February-May with a non-pro rider to get a refresher. They’ve had to work through some trust issues but are doing well together!
