About Canela
Canela and 11 other horses were part of a cruelty seizure in NE Texas. Canela and her herdmates were awarded to BEHS by the courts. Canela was pretty scrawny then and she wasn't halter broke. Her foster home put weight on her and taught her about the goodness of humans. Canela was adopted in 2013, but she was returned in 2014 because she bucked during training.
Canela competed in and won the professional division of the 2015 Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge. She was adopted by someone who met her at the trainer's facility before the Expo and challenge.
Evaluation and Training
When Canela arrived at BEHS, she had no been handled. Her foster home gentled her and got her leading, loading, standing for the farrier, grooming and veterinary care. In October 2012, she was used for a colt starting demo at the Bluebonnet Horse Expo. She was then adopted and sent to a trainer (2013) but she was returned in 2014 because she bucked under saddle. She'll need an adopter who is experienced and willing to work with her.
Canela spent June - October 2015 with trainer Riva England. Riva's ridden her in arenas and on trails. She's desensitized her to many things she might encounter while riding and has taught her to stop well, turn, and move out well under saddle. Canela will still be green and needs a rider willing to continue working with her, but she should make someone an excellent horse.
Canela will be competing under saddle with Riva England in the professional division of the Bluebonnet Horse Expo on October 17, 2015 and will be available for adoption then. You can follow their progress on their Facebook page.
