About Gemma
Gemma was seized along with several other horses from a neglect case. She's tried a few times to find a forever family, but the adoption never 'stuck'. She was at the Expo in 2014, showing off how pretty she is, when one of the Training Challenge contestants spotted her. She decided to adopt and will be using Gemma in a training apprenticeship program. She worked with Gemma for almost a year before being injured in a car accident. Her injuries prevent her from riding or working with horses, and she had to rehome Gemma with another approved Bluebonnet adopter.
Evaluation and Training
When Gemma came to Bluebonnet, she had not been handled. Her foster home taught her to be haltered and led, and in October 2011 she was chosen as a demonstration horse for trainer Aaron England. His comments were that whoever adopted Gemma was getting a smart, sensitive mare. He had her saddled and walking with a rider in less than two hours. Gemma was adopted in 2014 by a teenage girl who was apprenticing with Aaron England. Her adopter used Gemma in her apprenticeship program and spent a great deal of time working on Gemma's ground work and working with her under saddle. Gemma stand for the farrier, fly spray, tacking and mounting. She loads well. Under saddle, Gemma moves out easily at a walk, trot, and canter. However, she is very smart and can be opinionated. She needs an intermediate or above, firm confident rider. She has showed great interest in the cows but has not been started on cattle work yet. Gemma is not spooky (not even when a bobcat jumped out of the bushes right next to her while her adopter was riding her). Gemma has a great deal of potential for a lucky adopter.
