About Merlot

Merlot and several other horses were removed from negligent owners by law enforcement and placed with BEHS. Merlot was with Bluebonnet for several years and passed through several foster homes, In 2015, she attended the Bluebonnet Horse Expo and went home with a new foster. That foster decided pretty quickly that she was going to adopt Merlot and make her her new riding horse. She returned her in 2018 when she was moving out of state. She spent time with a couple of different foster homes and then in mid-2019, she moved to a brand new foster home. That home fell in love with her, their first foster, and adopted . Congrats to Merlot!

Evaluation and Training

Merlot is halter broke, leads and loads well. She also stands well for the farrier, grooming, and fly spraying. She stands for saddling and bridling and lets a rider mount. She’s also easy to catch and seems to enjoy attention. She is broke to ride.

In 2018, she competed in the non-pro under saddle division with a youth rider and did well. In November 2018, she went on a 7.3 mile trail ride at 7IL Ranch in Cat Springs and did fabulous. She's in good shape, nice to ride, and has been ridden by novices and kids in the past. She is going to make someone an excellent trail horse!

Merlot's only drawback is that she crow-hops when first being ridden. After a while, she stops and is fine to ride. She's learned she can sometimes intimidate people and will always test new riders. Unfortunately, because of that she's not really a horse for novice or timid riders.
