About Lord Maximus

Lord Maximus and his herd mates were surrendered to BEHS when the sheriff’s department responded to a call about animal neglect. He became the first foster for a new BEHS foster home, and they fell in love with him. They decided to adopt him when the Bluebonnet Horse Expo came around - they were afraid if he went to the Expo, someone else would adopt him! He spent many years with his adopter; however, they returned him to the rescue when their health and other life challenges wouldn't allow them to continue to care for him.

His adopter said he is spoiled and is used to coming and going as he pleases. He doesn’t like stalls, and he has kicked the stall walls in his current foster home. Other foster homes have not reported this problem, but he does do best in pasture. He loves attention and scratches, is just like a big kid when he knows he has your attention and loves to show off. He would run up and down the fence playing with her grandkids. She described him as very smart with a good temperament.

Lord Maximus was enrolled in the 2023 Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge with a youth rider. They did well together but she withdrew from the competition for personal reasons. You can see what they did together before she withdrew on his Facebook page CLICK HERE.

Evaluation and Training

Lord Maximus came to Bluebonnet as a young horse and was quickly adopted by his original foster home. She spent three years letting him be a spoiled pet, so when he came back to Bluebonnet he was pushy. He spent some time with a trainer in 2021 where he learned better ground manners and how to carry a saddle. He was adopted at the 2021 Bluebonnet Horse Expo, and his adopter sent him to trainer Dan Keen for several months.

Dan taught Lord Maximus groundwork, how to pick up his feet, and started him under saddle. He rode in an arena, in a pasture, and on trails. Dan recommends an adopter that will continue to work with Lord Maximus regularly and build a relationship with him. If he is warmed up before taking him out riding, Lord Maximus will ride the trails all day long. Lord Maximus likes to have a job. Unfortunately, Lord Maximus was too much horse for the adopter who sent him to Dan Keen, so she returned him.

While Lord Maximus is very sweet and loves attention, he can be pushy with timid handlers. He’s not for a novice person, and he prefers someone who will ride him regularly. With the right adopter, Lord Maximus could do anything.
