About Sweetie
Sweetie first came into the care of San Antonio Animal Care Services before being released to BEHS for rehabilitation and a new start. She made wonderful progress and was almost ready for adoption when a couple visited her foster home to meet a different horse. While that horse wasn’t the right fit, Sweetie immediately won them over with her gentle nature, and they adopted her on the spot.
In July 2025, Sweetie was returned through no fault of her own when her adopter had to move out of state. She came back just as kind, calm, and lovable as ever, and is now ready to find her forever home where she can get lots of love and treats.
Evaluation and Training
Personality & Manners:
- Extremely gentle and sweet-natured—lives up to her name
- Easy to handle and very people-oriented
- First to walk up in the pasture and enjoys attention
- Loves treats, grooming, and being pampered
- Calm and patient in new situations
- Good around children with supervision
- Gets along well with mares and geldings
- Low in the herd hierarchy; avoids conflict and fits easily into groups
Training & Abilities:
- Easy to catch and halter
- Loads easily into a slant-load trailer when led inside
- Walks politely right beside you when being led
- Stands tied for grooming, bathing, fly spray, and clippers
- Picks up all four hooves easily, good for the farrier
- Currently learning to ground tie at her foster home
- Lunges calmly at a walk in both directions (round pen and lunge line)
- No longer rideable due to age, but enjoys light groundwork and attention
Care:
- Currently on Equioxx to help with arthritis and maintain comfort
- Recently had a dental exam; missing some rear teeth on the right side and may need senior-friendly feed adjustments
- Does well in pasture turnout with compatible companions but recommends feeding separate so she gets her full meal
Why She’s Amazing:
Sweetie is the kind of horse who touches hearts effortlessly. She meets you at the gate, stands quietly for grooming, and leans into affection with complete trust. Her gentle spirit, impeccable manners, and loving personality make her a treasure. For someone wanting a calm, kind, companionable senior mare to spoil and adore, Sweetie is your girl.
