About Penny for Your Thoughts

Penny for Your Thoughts (Penny) was placed with Bluebonnet when she was retired from being a recipient mare at a large breeding facility. She attended the 2016 Bluebonnet Horse Expo where a trainer evaluated her and found out she was broke to ride. She was adopted by a Special Olympics riding program. She worked with special needs children and adults for five years before being returned in March 2022 when she no longer wanted to be a Special Olympics mount.
When she was returned, we discovered she was blind in one eye, and that may be the reason she stopped doing well for the Special Olympics riders.

Evaluation and Training

Penny served as a recipient mare before coming to Bluebonnet, so she was handled regularly. Her original foster home said she was a very sweet mare. She was evaluated by a trainer at the 2016 Bluebonnet Horse Expo who said she directed reins well, did well at a walk and trot, and really liked to stop.
She was re-evaluated after she was returned because she had developed reluctance to be ridden at the Special Olympics program who had originally adopted her. Her trainer found she was ok at the walk and trot but could be reluctant to move out.
She is available as a companion and pet or for very light riding (walk/trot for easy rides). She could also be used for leading children around on. Due to her age, she shouldn’t be ridden hard or multiple days in a row. She’s ready to have an easier life now and get plenty of love.
