About Rainy Day

Rainy Day came to Bluebonnet as part of a large neglect case. She was very sweet but shy and nervous, and it seemed like she hadn't had much good handling in her life. She was with a foster home for quite a while who worked with her on the ground, and she was then adopted as a pet. Unfortunately, she really needed more handling and training than her adopters could give her, so they returned her.

Evaluation and Training

Since being returned in 2023, Rainy Day has spent time with trainer Dawn Fraser. They started working through Rainy Day's distrust of humans so she could be caught, lead, and loaded into a trailer. They also worked together to show Rainy Day that farriers were not scary, and she's learned to stand for the farrier. Since she was pretty distrusting of farriers initially, we are looking for an adopter who has a patient, kind farrier who will continue to build Rainy Day's trust.

Dawn and her training assistant have started (or maybe restarted, since we don't know her history) Rainy Day under saddle. In the beginning, Rainy Day was very nervous about being mounted, but she's much improved now. Rainy Day is carrying a rider at a walk and trot, she's navigating obstacles, and she's traveled outside the arena.

Dawn added, "So far, she does everything we ask of her. She would do best in an experienced home since it takes a bit to earn her trust (and respect). But she really seems to like having a person, and to ride out to explore. A confident kid or small adult could really have a lot of fun with her. She could really go in any direction."

We would like to find her a smaller adult or experienced teen or older child who can continue working with her, gaining her trust, and then exploring the world together!
