Companies listed here are not vetted, verified, nor endorsed by Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society.  We’re providing this information as a starting point for horse owners in the event that they need help with a deceased horse.

While we all want our equine friends to be with us forever, far too often accidents, injuries, and old age take them from us. Unfortunately, many people don’t know what to do with their horse’s body.

Burial

If you own your own land, burial may be an option for you. Before making plans to bury your horse, though, you need to check with the county or city you live in to make sure there are no laws to prohibit you from burying your horse. You will need to rent a backhoe or hire a backhoe to dig the hole, and you will need a tractor to drag your horse into the hole. Costs for burials will vary depending on whether or not you have to rent or hire a backhoe.

If you need to bury a horse, you can check with local excavation companies, companies that install septic systems, and those that rent large equipment.  They may be able to assist you.

Burning

This can be done, but we don’t recommend it! It takes an amazing amount of wood, and it can take days or even weeks to complete the task. Additionally, the stench is almost unbearable.

Cremation

You may be able to have your horse cremated, but this may cost anywhere from $500 – $1,500.

Landfill

Some county and city landfills will accept horses. Most landfills charge you by weight, and many will dig a hole to place your horse’s body in and cover the hole. If you don’t have a way to get your horse’s body to the landfill, you can ask them for recommendations. Sometimes wrecker services will use a flatbed trailer to haul your horse’s body to the landfill for you.

Rendering

Rendering services will take your horse’s body to “recycle”. They will use the meat for carnivorous animals, and they will also use the skin, hooves, and bones for various items. Rendering services need to pick up your horse’s body as soon as possible, and many will charge for the service.
