About Margarita
Margarita is a beautiful mare with a past marked by hardship and uncertainty. She came to Bluebonnet after spending a year at the Houston SPCA, where she had been surrendered through a cruelty investigation, leaving much of her early history unknown. Understandably, she arrived defensive and fearful of handling. Over time, dedicated fosters and trainers have helped her learn to trust, be caught, handled, and begin her training journey. She was adopted in early 2024 and later returned through no fault of her own, and she continues to make steady progress as she rebuilds confidence with patient, consistent care. Margarita is a sensitive, intelligent mare who wants to connect, and her story reflects both the trauma she has endured and the remarkable resilience she carries forward.
Evaluation and Training
Personality & Manners:
- Watchful around unfamiliar people; may retreat to the far pasture until she feels safe
- Approaches her person for attention and companionship once trust is established
- Sweet, affectionate, and deeply connected to her handler when she feels secure
- History strongly suggests past trauma, and she responds best to calm, predictable interactions
- She is currently with Mares and Gelding and does well with both.
Training & Abilities:
- Can be caught in pasture with patience and treats
- Easy to halter once caught
- Loads in trailer when led inside
- Stands tied for hoof cleaning, grooming, and baths
- Working on gaining trust with the farrier
- Lunges at a walk, trot, and canter on lunge line
Care:
- Requires a patient handler
- Benefits from consistent routines and regular handling
- Needs continued desensitization and supportive handling to help with farrier
- Does best with a calm environment and a handler who reads her body language well
- Per returned adopter has kissing spine, but we do not have medical reports saying this.
Why She’s Amazing:
Margarita is amazing because she is the kind of horse who rewards patience with a truly meaningful bond. Despite a past marked by fear and uncertainty, she has shown tremendous resilience and a deep desire to connect. Once she trusts you, she becomes affectionate, attentive, and genuinely enjoys being near her person. Since she takes time to warm up is why we recommend companion only. The progress she has made—allowing grooming, seeking attention, approaching in the pasture, and trying her best even when she’s unsure—speaks volumes about her heart. Margarita is a special mare who will thrive with someone who values partnership, empathy, and patience.
