About Shelly
Shelly was an owner surrender due to a neglect case. She came to us very emaciated. Shelly competed in the 2022 Bluebonnet Training Challenge and was adopted that day.
Through no fault of her own, Shelly was returned in August of 2024.
Before being returned by her adopter, Shelly suffered an injury in pasture and lacerated multiple limbs. While she was treated for, and recovered from, that injury, it has left her with a swollen rear hock. She was vetted in March 2025, about a year after the injury occurred. Her vet saw no reduced motion in any joints or hoof tester sensitivity. Palpation of neck and back did not find any pain or damage. She did have some arthritis in her hocks and a mildly lowered rear fetlock, but her vet did not believe she needed medication at this time and cleared her for light to moderate riding. Her vet added that if she became lame over time, she should receive hock injections and Equioxx.
Evaluation and Training
Shelly's former owner said she was broke to ride, and her first foster had no problem saddling, bridling, or lunging her. She then went to a non-professional to spend four months preparing for the 2022 Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge. Her Challenge partner believed Shelly had been ridden but not trained/taught much. She worked with her on the ground and then under saddle, including over obstacles. She said Shelly loved obstacles and would probably make someone a nice trail horse!
Her adopter and adopter's kids also rode Shelly, and she did well with them.
Everyone who has met Shelly agrees that she is one of the sweetest horses they've ever met. She definitely loves attention, and she likes kids.
Because of Shelly's injury from 2024 and her veterinary exam from 2025 (see "About" section above), she's available for light to moderate riding. This means no jumping, play days, endurance, hard trail riding, or extended canter periods. She could be ridden at a walk and trot with short canter periods as a pleasure horse or trail horse.
