Scully is easy to catch in the pasture, will walk right up to you and then follow you around until you leave. He grooms well (including mane and tail), picks up all 4 feet, good for blanketing and fly spray. Baths are easy. Scully will self load into the trailer and prefers that the trailer be in motion when he’s inside. He will stand ground-tied and cross-tied. His training partner worked with him on standing still and has been able to stand on top of him, been under his belly peaking through his front legs, walked away from him, out of sight, and he hasn’t moved an inch.
He takes a saddle pad and saddles well with no issues. In the arena, he tends to have more go than whoa, but on the streets and trails he’s a very well behaved gentleman. He will take a bit and a bitless bridle. He will direct rein and neck rein.
He will walk, trot, and canter on a lounge line both directions with and without a saddle. He will look into you for direction, so you will need to keep your eye on him and reassure him he needs to keep doing what you’re asking.
After Scully exhibited intermittent lameness, he was vetted and diagnosed with navicular. He currently has shoes on his front feet and has received steroid injections (Sept. 2023). He is currently able to walk, trot and canter/lope and enjoys going off property to the trails. This horse wants to please and perform.
We would recommend someone with riding experience or a child that is working with a trainer for Scully or someone who just wants an all-around good horse to trail ride and love on. He’s never kicked out, bucked, or acted out and is a very trustworthy horse. By the way, he answers to the nickname that we’ve been calling him “Scully Bear”.
