About Bandera
Bandera is a beautiful moving, smart gelding who has a lot of try. He came to us from another rescue who said he was a Hackney cross, and he definitely has the big trot Hackneys are known for. His exact background is a mystery, but he shows signs of having had some rough handling in the past. Despite that, he really wants to have a person of his own and warms up to new people if they spend just a little time working with him. Although he’s got some baggage and isn’t for the inexperienced handler, he’s got a lot to offer a patient, kind, and supportive handler/trainer.
Bandera is competing in the Professional Division of the Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge with Morgan Adams. Bandera will be available for adoption on October 4, 2025, during the Bluebonnet Training Challenge and Expo at the Williamson County Expo Center in Taylor, TX. You can follow their progress on their Facebook page CLICK HERE

Bandera would like to thank you half sponsor, Beverly Zawacki, for helping care for him while he awaits a forever home!
Evaluation and Training
Personality & Manners:
- May take a few minutes to catch, but once caught is easy to halter
- Leads politely and walks calmly beside you
- Has been pastured with mares, geldings, and mixed herds with no trouble
- Sensitive but willing to try
- Intelligent and observant
- Learns quickly when handled with patience
Training & Abilities:
- Lunges in both the round pen and on a line at walk, trot, and canter
- Line-drives and has solid groundwork skills
- Currently being reintroduced to saddle pad work with patience and consistency
- Shows the movement, energy, and high trot often seen in Hackneys or Hackney crosses
- Loads in a trailer when led inside
- Improving with baths and fly spray—more relaxed each time
- Picks up his front feet well; still a little tense with his hind feet but allows handling
- Great for the farrier
Background & Care:
- Has not been started under saddle—previous attempts showed he was anxious and bucked when saddled
- Needs to be fed separately, as he may kick or bite if other horses crowd him at mealtime
- Paws when impatient.
- Needs a calm, quiet, confident handler to guide him
Why He’s Amazing:
Bandera is a sensitive, intelligent gelding who tries his best despite past fears. Every week he grows braver—whether it’s relaxing more under fly spray, finding his rhythm in the round pen, or quietly allowing his feet to be handled. His sweet nature shines through as he learns to trust, and he bonds with those who are gentle, patient, and consistent. With the right adopter, Bandera has all the potential to become a wonderful partner and a success story of resilience and second chances.
