Transfer of Equines Between Rescues Policy

  Policy Number 38

Effective: July 31, 2007 Version 2.0
Policy

In the process of placing equines in foster care and/or permanent, adoptive homes, it may be necessary for Bluebonnet Equine Humane
Society, Inc.’s (BEHS) to conduct a Transfer of Equine Between Rescues.

Procedure

The BEHS Foster Home Coordinator will determine if such transfer between rescues may be necessary and is in the best interest of BEHS and all equines involved.  If the equine is to be transferred from another rescue into BEHS, the Foster Home Coordinator will notify the officers of BEHS of such intent prior to the transfer and will provide reasons for doing so. If the equine is to be transferred from BEHS to another rescue, authorization of the transfer must be preceded by a majority vote of the officers of BEHS.

In the case of both incoming and outgoing BEHS equine transfers between rescues, a Transfer of Equines Between Rescues Form must be completed and signed by a representative from both BEHS and the other rescue involved.  The BEHS representative will mail the completed form to the Foster Home Coordinator within one week of transfer and the Foster Home Coordinator will provide a copy of the form to the other rescue.  It is the responsibility of the transferring rescue to document on this form, to the best of their knowledge, any medical/behavioral or other such issues or requirements the equine in transfer may possess.

It is the responsibility of the transferring rescue, to provide the receiving rescue a current, negative coggins of the equine in transfer.  BEHS will not accept EIA positive horses for any reason.

It is the responsibility of the transferring rescue to provide transport of the equine into the receiving rescue’s care unless otherwise arranged through the Foster Home Coordinator.  The Foster Home Coordinator will be responsible for making arrangements for the transfer between the other rescue and the BEHS foster home.

Any expenses incurred prior to the transfer are the responsibility of the

transferring rescue.

Once an equine transferred into BEHS arrives at the designated BEHS foster/adoptive home, that home must notify a BEHS officer of such within two days.

If an equine is transferred from BEHS to another rescue, the BEHS foster home must notify the BEHS Foster Home Coordinator of both the date of the equine’s departure and the date of the equine’s arrival at the new location.

If the equine is placed in foster care, BEHS will assume all financial support of the equine from that day forward.
