About Margarita

Margarita is a big, pretty mare who will benefit from ground training. She was transferred from the Houston SPCA, where she spent a year. She had been surrendered to a cruelty investigator, so we don’t know about her younger years. Upon intake with HSPCA, the vet noted she was “very defensive, bit and kicked” when they tried to treat her.

Margarita was supposed to compete in the 2023 Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge with a youth rider, but her rider had to withdraw (no fault of Margarita's).

Evaluation and Training

When Margarita arrived, she was very distrustful with people. She could not be caught or handled at first, but her original foster home worked with her and after time, she could catch her in the pasture with a treat. She also taught her to pick up all four feet and helped her begin to establish trust with people.

Margarita went to Jennfier Van Curen in 2022 to prepare to compete in the Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge. Jennifer worked with Margarita on the ground and taught her to be caught, haltered, and lead anywhere. She had Margarita loading and standing for hoof trims. When they progressed to saddling, though, Margarita began bucking and Jennifer felt like she needed too much work to be ready for the Challenge and withdrew.

Margarita spent October-June with trainer Carina Morris in Bryan/College Station. She got her going under saddle at a walk, trot, and canter and started doing liberty work with Margarita. Since Margarita is not the kind of horse who can have long periods off and would do best with consistent riding, she was assigned to an advanced teen rider for the 2023 Training Challenge. Margarita regressed some with a new rider and then her rider’s schedule was too hectic for frequent riding.

Margarita needs a very confident rider who can bring her back to work correctly and help build her trust again. She is very athletic and gorgeous and could do almost anything, she just needs the right person to help get her there.
