Last Thanksgiving, Kelly, Sal, and Sabine Lazo headed up to North Texas.  Their mission was to pick up 12-14 miniature horses.  Their owner had been ill for a long time and was now on hospice care.  Although many of the miniature horses had been show horses in their younger days, they hadn’t been handled or had good care in some time due to their owner’s illness.  When the Lazo family got there, they discovered 28 minis instead of 14 – and they all needed homes.

Kelly and Sal and Sabine were willing to go back for a second trip and to take most of the minis to their place until we could figure out where they would go.  So they went back on a long trip to pick up more minis – several in this group were fairly wild.

Sir Clyde (bay) was one of this group.

And just about a month later, we got another call from a sheriff’s department.  They had been working with a man to try to get him caring for his horses, but he had died. The family did not want the horses.  So this time, Amber went to collect the horses and minis who had not been handled much.  Kai (pinto) was one of those.

Both minis learned some basic skills with their foster homes, and then this summer Kai went to a teenage boy who was competing in his second Training Challenge while Sir Clyde went to one of our volunteers who was also competing in her second Challenge.  Both minis made huge progress with their Challenge partners, and both caught the eye of a long-time Bluebonnet supporter.  She adopted both before the competition – she took Kai home when she adopted her and picked Sir Clyde up at the Challenge.

Both minis are beloved now – their lives have changed enormously.  This is what rescue is all about.
