About Maya

Maya and her herdmates were removed from a negligent rescue in a joint effort between Camp County Sheriff’s Department, Safe Haven Equine Rescue, and the Humane Society of the US. The case involved over 150 horses , and Bluebonnet was one of many horse rescues who stepped up to give the horses homes.

Maya was diagnosed with EPM late in 2019. She was treated and has improved, but she is still unsteady at times and is not ridable.

Maya is a great companion horse. She is about the middle of the pecking order in the herd and she loves to be with other horses. She is not very trusting of people though, and it takes a long time to win her trust. Sudden movements, scare her, but she is ok as long as you move slowly and quietly around her. However, she is very gentle. She is an easy keeper, with a tendency to get fat. She had EPM and one hip is still uneven, but she gets around just fine, often galloping through the pasture just for fun. She is a very pretty horse.

Congrats to the lovely Maya! She was adopted to be a pet and companion by someone who has experience with EPM. We're so excited for her!

Evaluation and Training

Maya was hard to catch when she arrived, but she’s improved with frequent handling. She can be groomed, leads, loads, and will stand for the farrier. New things do scare Maya so she needs a home that will be patient with her in this area. Although Maya is not rideable she will make a great pet or companion for another horse.
