About Minx

Minx is bay miniature horse mare. She was seized with a large group of other minis and her record states she was a broodmare and had very little handling. Because of her neglect, she is skittish and takes a while to warm up to people. Once she trusts you, she will allow you to fly spray, brush, lift all of her hooves, and wash her, although she is naturally high energy and these tasks still require patience.

Overall, Minx is a very sweet, beautiful little mare who, through no fault of her own, has grown to distrust people, and will need continuous work to improve.

Minx will be competing in the Non-Pro In Hand Division of the Bluebonnet Horse Expo and Rescue Horse Training Challenge with trainer Stacy Davis. You can follow their progress on their Facebook page by CLICKING HERE.

The Expo and Training Challenge will be held on October 16, 2021 at the Williamson County Expo Center in Taylor, Texas. For more information about the Expo CLICK HERE, or for information about adopting a challenge horse

Evaluation and Training

Minx is well broke to lead and has been started on set-ups, in-hand trail, and longing. She is capable of, but not a fan of, jumping small jumps in hand. Using driving lines on her is best done in a very enclosed space, as she does not like ropes touching her sides and people behind her. She has not been started under saddle. She might, with a LOT of work, one day make a kids horse, as she likes smaller kids and people (less intimidating), but it would take a very special situation. Loud noises and fast movements set her on edge, and since these tend to go hand in hand with children, it would have to be an experienced child and/or parents.

Although her foster home would not categorize her as dangerous, Minx can definitely be challenging. When she doesn’t like what you’re doing (fly spraying, washing, etc.), she does rear- no striking, but she will go onto her hind legs repeatedly. She has sometimes kicked at other horses, mostly larger horses in her space or during feeding time, but the only time she’s kicked at people is during her first hoof trimming. She is not great about her hooves- as mentioned above, she is usually well-behaved if she trusts you, but she only trusts a handful of people, and it takes a team to hold her still, keep her feet up, and trim her hooves. The best approach with her is to do one hoof per day so she doesn’t become overwhelmed and stressed out.

Minx is easily catchable in a stall or small enclosure, but out in a pasture she takes some work and it is best if you have a chute or stall to run her into. Once you catch her, things operate more smoothly, but she is not ever very eager to go to work, so it takes some effort to get hold of her. Minx does not set back, but if she feels she’s been tied too long, she will reach up and rear and/or paw. This could be fixed with time and training, and it’s never been a safety issue since she is so small and is only skittish, not malevolent.

Ideally, Minx would go to someone who is looking for a partner in the in-hand events- whether in-hand trail, at liberty events, or even just a walking partner. She is precious and very sweet and could make someone a lovely pet, partner, or companion for the right horse.
