About McCrae

McCrae was surrendered to law enforcement and then placed with Bluebonnet. He was in very poor shape when he arrived and had been gelded right before coming to Bluebonnet. We don’t know any of his history before coming to the rescue.

McCrae was part of the 2022 Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge. He placed 3rd overall in the Professional Division, 3rd in the Professional Freestyle Class, 3rd in the Professional Obstacle Course Class, and 5th in the Professional Basic Skills class. He was adopted at the Challenge but returned about a month later because he did not get along with the adopter’s other horses.

McCrae was re-adopted in 2023 by a lesson and training barn who has adopted from Bluebonnet before. Unfortunately, he did not stay sound for daily lessons and playdays, so they returned him.

Both adopters have said he can be very ‘stud like’ – at his first adopter’s place, he did not get along with other horses. At the second home, he was turned out with a gelding and did fine. He did not do well in a mixed herd, though.

McCrae’s current foster home has him in shoes because he had long toes with underslung heals. She and her farrier feel he needs to be kept in shoes for a few more months before transitioning to barefoot and will then need to be kept on a regular trim schedule.

Evaluation and Training

McCrae was started under saddle in 2022 by Cara Schroeder as part of the Training Challenge. Cara rode him in and outside an arena, on trails, and around cattle. He spent about six months with a lesson barn in 2023 but was returned because he was not sound for hard riding/playdays. The lesson barn said he was the kind of horse you do not have to ride frequently: he can have weeks, maybe even months, off work and be the same under saddle when you start riding him again as he was when you left off. They had kids as young as 13 riding him who were intermediate riders, and he did well. They did not have him with beginner riders, but his former trainer thinks he has potential as a kids’ horse with more riding time.

The trainer who adopted him and returned him feels he’s best suited for light to moderate riding – easy trails, pleasure riding, etc. No hard riding, playdays, jumping, endurance, challenge trails, etc.
