About Dom Perignon
Dom Perignon came into BEHS as part of a 300+ animal neglect case involving multiple species and several agencies. He had been running with a group of other stallions and hadn’t been handled much prior to coming to BEHS. He was adopted in 2007 and returned in 2008. He was then readopted in 2009 and returned in 2013 when his adopter passed away. He was adopted quickly but returned because he didn’t do well in the mixed herd he was kept in. He was adopted in 2014 and returned in 2015 because his adopters had to move across the country. He attended the 2015 Bluebonnet Horse Training Challenge, met an adopter, and went to a new home!
Although it took Dom Perignon a few adopters to find the right person, he finally did. He was a much beloved pet and riding horse - and Cheryl's very first horse. She was devastated when she lost him - as were we all.
Evaluation and Training
Dom Perignon was started under saddle in 2009 and was green broke when he was adopted. Former foster homes and adopters have trail ridden him, ridden him in arenas, and ridden him over obstacles. He's not spooky but does like to look at things. He's been ridden past lawnmowers, charging dogs, sprinklers that suddenly turn on , deer that pop out onto the trail, dump trucks, and trash cans and he's handled it all very well.In September 2013, Dom's foster home took him to his first horse show. She said he was easy to handle, even in the strange place with all the strange horses. He just went into a couple of walk-trot classes, but he did behaved well. Dom does best with a confident handler - he will take advantage of less confident handlers both under saddle and on the ground.
