About Tippy

Tippy came to BEHS in 2007 as part of a neglect case involving a couple of agencies in Arkansas. She was adopted and returned in 2012 due to no fault of hers. She moved into a new foster home in 2013 and the family fell in love with her. They were supposed to compete in the 2013 Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge but her foster home couldn't stand the thought of letting Tippy go and decided to adopt her instead. She returned her in 2019 due to no fault of Tippy's. Tippy was placed in an experienced foster home who has adopted another horse and a donkey from Bluebonnet. She adopted her a few months later, but returned her in September of 2019.

While Tippy has no known health problems, she does have many scars on her back on her. That don’t seem to bother her, though. She is somewhat swayback and her veterinarian recommended she be limited to light to moderate riding. After she was evaluated her foster home reported that she was becoming uncomfortable with any riding at all so she became adoptable only as a companion.

Tippy was one of seven of our companion only/non-ridable horses that were adopted by one of our supporters. She had the space, time, support system and love to provide a sanctuary, and forever home, to some of the hardest to place horses. Anna, Reba, Tippy, Skeeter, Meadow, Herald, and Miss Pebbles all came to Bluebonnet from different neglect cases, and they all are unridable due to old injuries, age, or conformation issues. These guys have found an amazing home. Thank you to Melissa A. for giving them a place to be - to be fed, to be loved, to be looked after.

Evaluation and Training

Tippy was ridden by her former adopters and did best when ridden with other horses. She spent a couple of weeks with a trainer in January 2013 to be evaluated and to learn to better give to pressure and work with people. Her next adopter used her mostly as a lead line pony and said Tippy loved carrying her grandkids around! She is very gentle and sweet.

She says Tippy also does well with an adult, as long as the adult is firm. She has been ridden by novice riders, too, and done well. She is easy to catch, loves to be groomed and loves attention. Take a look at her ground manners in the video link at the bottom of the page. Tippy is food aggressive and small animals need to be kept away from her at feeding time. Tippy does not tie well alone and will set back if other horses are not tied nearby.

Since Tippy hadn't been ridden in quite some time, she was evaluated in November 2019. The trainer said Tippy saddles and bridles well but probably never much training beyond the very basics.
