About Scarlett

Scarlett came to BEHS in 2009 as part of a large neglect case. She was rehabilitated and adopted by her foster home, but returned a few years later when he had to cut back. Last year she competed in the Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge and did well, but she's a sensitive mare who needed to find the right person. She finally found her person in 2014 and was a companion for a lonely horse until she was returned in 2018 when her adopter could no longer afford her.Scarlett was adopted as a pet and companion and will be keeping adopted horse Monroe company!

Evaluation and Training

Scarlett's former adopter worked with her. He taught her to flex on the ground and give to pressure, to stand for saddling, and he rode her a few times in a saddle and rope halter. He rode both in an arena and out in pasture. However Scarlett had not been worked with in a while when she arrived back at the rescue. Her foster foster home worked her through some separation anxiety issues under saddle and competed with her at the Training Challenge. She was adopted mostly as a pet, and we don't know if she was ridden during that time. Her first foster home after being returned (October 2018) felt like she hadn't been ridden in a long time. She said Scarlett did not do well with a bit but was fine in a bitless bridle. She said Scarlett had a lot more whoa than go, but that they were able to walk and trot in the arena in each direction. She said she was good under saddle and showed no signs of bad habits. She's also calm and sweet once caught and has potential for beginners. Her current foster home says that Scarlett sets back when tied, but they're working on this. She rides in a sidepull and Scarlett does well in that - she doesn't do well with a bit. She says Scarlett prefers to walk and trot and enjoys trail rides, as opposed to ring work.
