About Hickory

Hickory was seized from a neglectful owner along with several other horses. When he arrived, he was not halter broke and was very scared of people: he would kick and strike if cornered. He went to a trainer who got him halter broke, but even after that he was still difficult to handle. In 2012, a trainer offered to compete with him in the Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge. He made a complete turn-around with his trainer and placed 1st in the Professional division. His trainer formed a great bond with him during the training and decided to adopt him and use him for training demonstrations during clinics. Hickory will eventually become the trainer's kids' horse, too!

Evaluation and Training

When Hickory arrived at BEHS in 2009, he hadn't been handled and he wasn't sure he wanted to be part of a world full of humans. He spent time with a trainer to get halter broke, but when he came home he was still spooky and would bolt if startled. Hickory was extremely lucky when he was chosen by a trainer to compete in the 2012 Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge. Because of his trainer's time and skill, Hickory is now being ridden at the walk, trot, and canter and has learned to navigate trail obstacles and many other new skills. He's still probably not a horse for a timid rider/handler, but he's come such a long ways and has great potential as a trail or working horse.

Hickory is competing in the 2012 Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge on October 20, 2012 at the Bluebonnet Horse Expo in Austin, Texas. He will not be available for adoption until the day of the Expo.
