About Blackie

Blackie was seized by law enforcement and placed with BEHS by the courts. When he arrived, Blackie looked like a woolly mammoth and knew very little. As he gained weight, he shedded out and turned into a cute black pony. He spent some time with a trainer in 2012 and shortly after training he met a nice family. They adopted him as a horse for their teenage daughter, but he was returned three years later when the family lost interest in horses. Blackie attended the 2015 Bluebonnet Horse Expo where he met someone who was interested in him. She applied and adopted him not long after the Expo!

Evaluation and Training

Blackie had not been handled in a long time before coming to BEHS, but he is coming around well. He is sweet, quiet and well-behaved. He is easy to halter and leads well. He stands quietly for grooming and saddling. He spent two weeks with a trainer in June 2012. They rode him in the arena, around cattle, and on trails and through ravines. He can open a gate with a rider and navigate trail obstacles. The trainers felt he had been ridden in the past but not trained well.

He was adopted and then only ridden a handful of times. He was returned in 2015 and trainer Hilary LoBue has been working with him. He's doing well with her and has been ridden by two teenagers in his current foster home. He still needs a confident handler, but in time and with additional training he has the potential to be a nice novice horse, too.
