About Merida

Merida's owner signed her over to BEHS when she was investigated for neglect. Merida hadn't been handled much in several years, and she was nervous about the new people in her life. Her foster home worked with her, gave her confidence, and then brought her to the 2012 Bluebonnet Horse Expo. While at the Expo, she realized she couldn't let Merida leave, so she adopted her!

Evaluation and Training

When Merida was picked up, she was almost impossible to catch, but it appears that was a learned behavior. At her foster home, she can be caught easily from the left side but is harder to approach on the right side. She leads well, loads well, and stands tied well - although she paws when tied. She stands for saddling and is learning how to longe and work in a round pen. She walks, trots, and canters over a tarp, ground poles, and elevated ground poles. Her foster "mom" says she's a gorgeous mover! She's learned to stand for fly spraying and allows her foster mom to clip her as well. She fidgets a bit with the farrier, but she's mostly good. She wears a winter blanket, too, and is adjusting to life as a pampered pony! We don't yet know if she is broke to ride, but her foster home plans to continue working with her. As her training progresses, her adoption fee will increase.
